Oct 8, 1542: Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into San Pedro #OTD and named it "Bahia de Los Fumas" (Bay of Smokes).

Ninety years ago, this #JuanRodriguezCabrillo sculpture by Henry Lion was dedicated at #CabrilloBeach (August 1936). #WPA #NewDealArt

A photo of the Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo statue (1936) that stands outside the Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse.

From the LA Times (August 1936): "The statue of heroic size, depicts Cabrillo, the Portuguese explorer in the services of King Charles V of Spain, as he stood upon the prow of his ship in the year 1542 sighting the shoreline at a point in San Pedro which is now the location of Cabrillo Beach, the city’s manmade seaside playground.”

Took this photo in 2025.

While Cabrillo's voyage had no historical impact, since it predates the Mayflower by 78 years, California historians see Cabrillo's voyage as making California “one of the places where America began." #CabrilloDay #SanPedro #CabrilloBeach #Gidget bennetkelley.wordpress.com/2021/09/28/c...
