Bill C-22 will harm Canada's ability to conduct science and polling. Online research participation will become less safe, as metadata will allow anonymous participants to be unmasked. Researchers will have to deal the issue of metadata retention in their ethics reports and studies.

European civil society organizations should be prepared to initiate legal action against any potential trade deals with Canada over bill C-22. Bill C-22 is incompatible with EU law, and forces companies operating in the EU to break the law.
