New blog post: arachnids of Toronto's newest park, Biidaasige! Especially featuring thin-legged wolf spiders (_Pardosa lapidicina_). https://nevillepark.ca/2026/10/09/arachnids-of-biidaasige-park/

#WeevilWednesday: a weevil in peril!!

(It has fallen onto the web of a grass spider. I decided not to interfere with nature.)

#bugstodon #insects #beetles #weevils #Coleoptera #Curculionidae #Entiminae

A pale beetle with a short, wide snout with two elbowed antennae coming off it, flailing on its back on a barely visible sheet of spider silk. A log fence rail is to the right.Another angle of the weevil. Note its large feet. It may be an Asiatic Oak Weevil which I also photographed in the vicinity.A further-out shot. Its feet are tangled in the silk. The web inhabitant clearly wasn't that hungry.

Can anyone ID this bug? Found this massive insect in my room this morning, it is around 10 cm long (!) and probably almost 2 cm in diameter at its largest point. In southern France, for context we are in drought and it just rained. A locust?

big steppy

For #WeevilWednesday, I think this little buddy from High Park is an Asiatic Oak Weevil (_Cyrtepistomus castaneus_).

#bugstodon #insects #beetles #weevils #Coleoptera #Curculionidae #Entiminae #HighPark #toronto

A broad-nosed weevil walking along a log fence, in profile. Its somewhat pear-shaped body is a dark reddish-brown but covered with pale, slightly green-iridescent scales. Its elytra are grooved and covered with small fine hairs. It has a stout, whiskered snout with long elbowed antennae coming off it, and round black compound eyes. One clawed foot is raised.

Weirdest thing is happening right now.. Any control characters, arrows, home, end, etc are not working in the mastodon input box.. They work in the same browser yet, so seems to be a mastodon problem :-/

#askfedi #pnw #frogstodon #Birds #bugstodon Anyone got an id on what this nighttime visitor is?

We can hear them, but not see them

Guesses:
- tree cricket
- pacific chorus frog
- pretty sure it's not a cicada?

Whoever it is, they're quite happy in our trees. Would love to know more

it's #WeevilWednesday

black vine weevil (_Otiorhynchus sulcatus_)

#bugstodon #insects #beetles #weevils #Coleoptera #Curculionidae #Entiminae

A robust, roughly pear-shaped black beetle with a pebbly, shiny exoskeleton with small irregular patches of lighter brown scales and, of course, a snout (short and broad with antennae coming off it). It is on a flattish pale stone surface. The same weevil from a slightly more overhead view. You can see both of its good-sized round black compound eyes.

Took a little detour to some streetside pollinator gardens while running an errand today and was rewarded with SO. MANY. LOCUST. BORERS. 💛🖤💛

#bloomscrolling #bugstodon #insects #beetles #LonghornBeetles #Coleoptera #Cerambycidae

A yellowjacket was…No! It's a beetle! A beetle with an elongated body, black with yellow markings, that make it look like a wasp at first glance, feeding on pollen from aster-ish yellow flowers (idk I'm not a plantologist). It has long red-brown legs and very long red-brown antennae, as befits a member of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae). Its black, oval eyes have "cutouts" around the base of the antennae, like the cursed phone front camera notch.A head-on view of a locust borer feeding on yellow flowers (goldenrod, I think). The thorax has horizontal stripes of almost fur-like yellow scales. The antennae stretch way out to either side.A locust borer stands with its back two pairs of legs on one flower cluster while grasping another with its front legs to feed.Non-macro shot from above of two locust borers on clumps of small yellow flowers. Goldenrod? Asters? Fuck, are goldenrods asters? Oh shit, they are. Fuck.

a bug (beetle?) of some variety with a green & black patten on its back, perched semi-camouflaged on the edge of a fern leaf, with a shadow cast over the lower edge from my phone as I got up in his business for a close-up

Met this lovely and impressive _Camponotus_ princess*, damn near an inch long, on my way getting groceries.

* Until she takes off her wings and settles down to start a new colony. Then she's a queen. Note: I made this up

#bugstodon #insects #ants #Hymenoptera #Formicidae

An extremely large, robust dark reddish-brown winged carpenter ant resting on a smooth stone surface in late afternoon sun. Her thorax is unusually muscular (because of the wing muscles) and her abdomen is very large.
