New episode: Rosie Ruiz "won" the 1980 Boston Marathon in 2:31:56—barely sweating, unable to recall the course. Winner Bill Rodgers never saw her pass. Eight days later the title went to Jacqueline Gareau. How the fraud unraveled. Listen now. #BostonMarathon #Running #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

Rosie Ruiz didn't get caught on camera cheating at Boston in 1980. She got caught by the opposite — no photos, no checkpoint logs, no sightings. The case against her was built entirely on where she wasn't.

Interesting data from the applicant pools for the last 5 Boston Marathon entry periods. Bottom line: You need to beat your qualifying time by 5-7 minutes to be among the 70% who get in.

The first Boston Marathon in 1897 wasn't 26.2 miles — it ran 24.5 unmeasured miles from Ashland. The winner, John J. McDermott, wasn't a Boston hero either: he was a New York City lithographer who clocked 2:55:10.

The first Boston Marathon wasn't 26.2 miles — fifteen men ran 24.5 miles from Ashland in 1897, and an Irish-born winner, John J. McDermott, took it in an upset. The distance everyone assumes is standard came later. #RunningHistory #Marathon #BostonMarathon #Running #TheLongRun
