New study shows that #warming from seasonal leaf area loss outweighs the cooling from an equivalent gain in #BorealForest. This asymmetry is driven by #transpiration limits in the growing season, and by canopy-snow #albedo contrasts in winter. #RemoteSensing www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Canada's boreal forests absorb quite a bit of winter heat, which could offset up to a fifth of their cooling benefits. #borealforest

He had a biology degree. He'd paddled northern Canada for 15 years. He lived on the edge of it.
And he had never once heard the words "boreal forest."

Deep in Europe's misty boreal forests, the elusive Eurasian Lynx stalks the shadows. This solitary apex predator is a master of stealth and silence, ruling the wild as a true phantom of the woods.

#LazyMonday (my recovery day) short early evening walk on the farm. Sun was still up but behind the trees when I (heard, first) this Ruffed Grouse in the mixed woods. It was alert and moving away from me, but still stopping to peck at Snowberries #Birds #Alberta #Canada #Alberta #BorealForest

Same alt all pics. In dull evening light in the shade of mixed woods, a mid-sized bird- maybe the size of a small chicken, walking on the forest floor. The bird has an intricate mix of spots and bars and chevrons from near white through pale grey, darker greys, black with tan through dark brown- giving it excellent camouflage against the complex forest background. It is alert with head up and the crest on its head raised, neck stretched out- in one photo it is even more stretched out as it tries to slink away discreetly. Clearly not *that* worried, though, in another shot it has paused by a Snowberry bush to peck at berries. The ground is covered with fallen branches, some covered with moss, plus mixed vegetation- scattered clumps of grass, occasional dandelion leaves, small shrubs etc, green with scattered bits of gold. Even with a bit of enhancing on the bird, it still blends well into the vegetation.Same alt all pics. New boreal forest research reveals a hard limit: protect 20% of land OR extend rotations to 90 years to prevent bird population collapse. Current #BorealForest #Conservation #Biodiversity #Forestry
