A Labor Day poem in the style of Tennyson The early morn is grey and cold with dew, When first the ploughman rises from his bed, And breaks the hush of night that lies around; The cart is yoked, the oxen low and wake, And down the furrow the long day is ploughed. Not idly sits the hand that shapes the steel, Nor vainly bends the back beneath the heat; For every sweat-drop has its hidden worth, And every toil-worn finger bears a seed That shall not perish in the silent earth. The harvest ripens on the golden field, The shipman guides her through the briny deep, The weaver counts the threads of her bright loom, And in the foundry's furnace fires are fed- And all these hands have built the world we dwell. Now rest is given to the weary frame, And bells go ringing through the sleeping town; For well they know that strength is bought by pain, And honour waits the honest, patient hand.
