Julie Dash raised $800,000 from the PBS series American Playhouse to make her first feature, Daughters of the Dust (1991). Hollywood executives had rejected the project. Released by Kino International, it became the first feature directed by an African-American woman to receive a theatrical release in the United States. In 2004 the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry.
