Seen a few twig-layers deep in this almost leafless tree sits a mostly black woodpecker. He has a few horizontal rows of white dots on his wings, and a white back between black shoulders. His head is turned and we can clearly see his left eye and just a bit of red crown in the shadows. He has a wide black eye stripe sandwiched in white. The bokeh is blue and green from the sky and trees in the distance.

A bit late today, but here's one of the standard two North American birds for the theme: a male Red-winged Blackbird.

A Red-winged blackbird perches delicately on a thin twig extending out from a bare branch. The background shows plant leaves from other trees, and beyond that the sky is a dull gray.

This photo captures the moment before a pelagic cormorant's feet leave the ground as it flies off the edge of a barnacle-covered rock. The large bird has iridescent green feathers that reflect at the right angle of light, but otherwise appears black. Its face is red and it has a thick band of white above its legs. Its wings are raised straight up in the air and its legs stretch behind it as it leans forward to fly.
