The western bitter bolete is a mostly pale yellow bolete with a magical characteristic: it stains blue when bruised or cut. To show off this fun color-changing ability, my wife cut a slice of the cap off and wrote "I'm blue" in the yellow pores of the slice, and the words immediately turned a deep blue, along with the cut edges of the mushroom.

Tylopilus felleus- also known as the bitter bolete. Not toxic but tastes awful. Grows underneath Oak and Beech- and they get to be quite large. The top of this one was plate-sized. ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒฟ

A large specimen of a bitter bolete mushroom. Plate sized cap growing under oak and maple forest. Big chonky shroom.
