Macaws use their zygodactyl feet—two toes forward, two back—to grip branches securely while they forage. Their powerful beak is perfectly adapted for cracking open hard nuts and seeds found high in the canopy. #SarasotaJungleGardens #BirdFacts

Macaws are incredible; did you know the unique patterns on their bare facial patches act like individual fingerprints? They also use their powerful hooked beaks as a versatile 'third foot' for maneuvering through dense branches. #BirdFacts #SarasotaWildlife

Fun Fact: Roadrunners are a species of ground cuckoo belonging to Neomorphinae, a subfamily of the Cuculidae family, or cuckoo family, consisting of New World ground cuckoos.

This means that Sonny the Cuckoo Bird could be Road Runner's cousin.

Screenshot of the first half of the Wikipedia page for Roadrunner, the species of animal, or bird.

The beginning paragraph of the Wikipedia article reads, "The roadrunners (genus Geococcyx), also known as chaparral birds or chaparral cocks, are two species of fast-running ground cuckoos with long tails and crests. They are found in the southwestern and south-central United States, Mexico and Central America, usually in the desert. Although capable of flight, roadrunners generally run away from predators. On the ground, some have been measured at 32 km/h (20 mph)."

Below that is a section labeled, "Species", and it reads, "The subfamily Neomorphinae, the New World ground cuckoos, includes 11 species of birds, while the genus Geococcyx has just two:".

To the right of the page is an infobox. In it is a photo of a greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), running, with its back facing the camera, and the following information underneath: Under the section labeled "Scientific classification": "Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Cuculiformes
Family: Cuculidae
Subfamily: Neomorphinae
Genus: Geococcyx
Wagler, 1831"

Under the section labeled "Type species": "Geococcyx variegata
Wagler, 1831" ("Geococcyx variegata" links to the Wikipedia article for "Greater Roadrunner", which is the species "Geococcyx californianus")

Under the section labeled "Species": "G. californianus
G. velox"Screenshot of the first half of the Wikipedia page for Cuckoo, a species of bird.

The beginning paragraphs of the Wikipedia article read, "Cuckoos and Roadrunners are birds in the family Cuculidae, the sole taxon in the order Cuculiformes. The cuckoo family includes the common cuckoo, roadrunners, koels, malkohas, couas, coucals, and anis. The coucals and anis are sometimes separated as distinct families, the Centropodidae and Crotophagidae, respectively.[citation needed] The cuckoo order Cuculiformes is one of three that make up the Otidimorphae, the other two being the turacos and the bustards. The family Cuculidae contains 150 species, which are divided into 33 genera.

The cuckoos are generally medium-sized, slender birds. Most species live in trees, though a sizeable minority are ground-dwelling. The family has a cosmopolitan distribution; the majority of species are tropical. Some species are migratory, including all those breeding in cooler temperate climates. The cuckoos feed on insects, insect larvae, and a variety of other animals, as well as fruit. Some species (for example, the majority of cuckoo species living in Eurasia) are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other species and giving rise to the terms "cuckoo's egg" and "cuckold" as metaphors. However, most species raise their own young.

Cuckoos have played a role in human culture for thousands of years, appearing in Greek mythology as sacred to the goddess Hera. In Europe, the cuckoo is associated with spring, and with cuckoldry, for example in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. In India, cuckoos are sacred to Kamadeva, the god of desire and longing, whereas in Japan, the cuckoo symbolises unrequited love."

A Greater Roadrunner doesn't always begin a cold desert morning by running. ☀️🐦

The bird can raise the feathers across its back, exposing dark skin underneath that absorbs the morning sunshine and helps it warm up.

Barn Owls have one ear higher than the other so they can hear sounds in three dimensions. Their dish-like face acts as a funnel that delivers sounds directly to their ears. I especially love how it looks like there are galaxies in their feathers. (OC) #owl #bird #birdphotography #birdfacts

Common murres live in large colonies that could be as big as a million plus birds. To identify their egg easier, mama murres each lay a pear-shaped egg with color and pattern that is unique. Colors range from white to pink to turquoise. (OC) #bird #birding #birdphotography #birdfacts
