This is partly to try and get BIBFRAME closer to the WEMI structure that the library community has become used to via the LRM & RDA (& previously FRBR) - there is a risk here that we may end up reproducing the complexity of MARC that BIBFRAME was designed to reduce #bfwe2026
Q7 Are there any gaps in BIBFRAME that need to be addressed to help the transition from MARC21?
Tiziana: The core BIBFRAME model does not address every context - it is designed to be a simple model so the extensions being developed are introducing additional layers of complexity #bfwe2026
Nancy: We're talking about LLM tools to help cataloguers do their work; detecting duplicates, identifying entity matches, disambiguating Names (ie not tools to replace us) #bfwe2026
Gwenny: AI could help us by making suggestions about related Works & other entities, but always with human review & sense-checking #bfwe2026
Q6 Impact of AI on LD/BIBFRAME adoption?
Lisa: AI is interesting because you can use it to find potential relationships between entities, but also because it asks us questions about trust - when are you sure about a match/link? &when do we trust any automated process? #bfwe2026
Q5 Key take aways for medium sized libraries?
Gwenny: You don't have to do everything all at once, and there are different ways to implement - you don't have to make a complete break from your existing environment, you can work in a hybrid environment #bfwe2026
Q4 Demonstrating added value early on is key; do you have examples?
Lisa: Seeing the clarity of the BIBFRAME record from the start compared to MARC tags - &now seeing the impact in discovery layers with clustering Instances & linking between entities #bfwe2026
Nancy: each editor has been developed to address a specific use-case or test environment - having multiple editors lets cataloguers test what they actually want not just live with one tool #bfwe2026
Q3 why are there so many Linked Data editors?!
Tiziana: we are moving from pilots & projects where different tools inc. editors have been developed - this is a good thing because it is community-owned development, rather than owned by a particular system vendor #bfwe2026
Good to see the development of tools & technologies to support Linked Data coming online from system vendors like Clarivate, EBSCO, OCLC - should help more libraries to begin testing & engaging #bfwe2026
There's an understandable desire to see 'proof of concept' and 'proof of value' examples before institutions jump onboard; especially as the transition will require investment in staff training as well as infrastructure #bfwe2026
Q2 Where are we in terms of implementation?
Nancy: it is a bit spotty still - some fine examples of Linked Data implementations including Library of Congress, ShareVDE & National Library of Sweden - still some institutional inertia #bfwe2026
Gwenny: it was surprising for us that conversion of legacy MARC21 to a Linked Data WEMI model actually went quite smoothly! #bfwe2026
Lisa: Navigating the philosophical discussions about data modelling & the concrete challenges of implementation from a technical and a human perspective #bfwe2026
Tiziana: Interesting experiencing how flexible people can actually be given the opportunity & the sense of community that can be built as we go through this transition #bfwe2026
#bfwe2026 BIBFRAME Round Up Discussion Panel: Matias Frosterus, Nancy Lorimer, Tiziana Possemato, Lisa Sjögren & Gwenny Vlaemynck.
Q1 what has been most surprising about implementation so far?
Nancy: Human emotional response to change; fear of replacement & fascinating how people love MARC21 !
This is what keeps me up at night... how we get ~200 years' worth of very variable MARC collections metadata 'ready' for conversion to BIBFRAME without any additional staffing resource #bfwe2026
Entity-first production workflows are the end goal - but it will take time to get there #bfwe2026
