Authors, what's one thing you wish you could know about your manuscript before publishing it?

Whether it's pacing, character development, confusing scenes, or whether the ending actually lands emotionally, I'd love to know. 📚

Looking for a few beta readers!

57,000-word speculative/dystopian/dark thriller, set in Florida in 2039.

I'd love feedback on suspense, characters, pacing, and emotional impact.

Content warning: graphic violence and crude language.

Interested? Reply or DM me.

Bluesky authors, what are you working on right now? 👀📚

A novel? Short story? Something completely chaotic that you’re not ready to explain yet?

Are you at the stage where you’d be open to another pair of eyes?

Beta readers see things we can't. After enough rewrites, our own pages start to blur.

What's the best thing a beta reader ever caught in your work?

@josephadeniji37.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 1:12 PM

If you’ve recently finished a first draft, congratulations. Getting to the end is an achievement in itself. What comes next for you: revisions, developmental editing, or beta readers?

Beta readers can catch things an author may miss after reading the same manuscript repeatedly.

Where did you lose interest?
What confused you?
Which character stayed with you?

Honest reader feedback can reveal a lot.

Most authors only find out where readers get bored after publication. A fresh reader can catch slow spots, missed emotional beats, and endings that need more room. What’s one part of your manuscript you wish you could see through a reader’s eyes now?

Indie authors don’t always need someone to rewrite their book.
Sometimes they need someone to read it like a stranger and say:
This part worked.
This confused me.
I wanted more here.
I almost stopped reading here.
That’s where a good beta reader can help.

Before requesting feedback, know what you want reviewed.

Pacing? Characters? Plot? Dialogue? Reader experience?

“Tell me what you think” can work, but specific questions often lead to much more useful feedback.

Writers, how do you get the most from a beta reader? Choose someone familiar with your genre, give them clear areas to focus on, and don't rely on a single opinion. When the same issue appears in multiple responses, pay attention.

Writers, what makes feedback genuinely useful to you? Is it simply knowing what went wrong, or understanding why a scene didn't land, where you lost interest, and how the story felt from a reader's perspective?

Sometimes the smallest reader reaction can reveal something an author never noticed while writing.

A moment that made me pause.
A character I immediately connected with.
A scene I wanted to keep reading.

Those reactions matter too.
