🍺Nearly 5,000 years ago, getting part of your paycheck in beer was considered normal.
In the ancient world, beer found its way into wages, laws, religion, literature, and everyday life.
Civilization had its priorities.

5. getting more technical, some analyses of Oktoberfest-Märzen from the 1950s:
4b. more recently, I followed up on this and reconstructed the complete list of beer stalls/huts at the Oktoberfests 1895 and 1896, clearly showing that Vienna Lager, Budweiser (from Bohemia) and Kulmbacher Export were poured at Oktoberfest:
4a. I followed this up with a list of beers (both breweries and beer styles) at Oktoberfest that I could identify from Oktoberfest programmes:
4. a blog post going back to 2017, with historic ads from 1895 and 1896 of various beers that were served at Oktoberfest:
3. going even further back, this is what Oktoberfest was like in 1843:
2. what beers could you drink at Oktoberfest in the 1960s? There was certainly more choice in beer styles compared to today.

While cleaning up Google Drive I found an old article about the "battle" to be Minnesota's craft beer capital between Duluth and St. Paul in 2013-2015.
It was too fun of a story to stay buried, so I dropped it on the Substack: mnthen.substack.com/p/the-great-...
What is Märzen? In 1950, the second brewmaster of Hofbräuhaus Munich was put on trial over that question.
Here's a job ad from 1841, in which the citizens of Pilsen with the right to brew announced that they were currently building a brewery, to be finished in autumn 1842, and that they were looking for a brewer to fill the position of managing director or brewmaster by end of May 1842.
Smoke-free kilns changed brewing. Bamberg kept its Rauchbier tradition alive—and smoked beer found new expressions, including Alaskan Smoked Porter in 1988.
