Happy Baturday! 🦇
Silver-haired Bats are widespread across Alberta, but we still know surprisingly little about where they spend the winter. Do they stay in BC? Head to Montana? Somewhere else entirely?

Some bat mysteries are still waiting to be solved.

Close-up photo of a Silver-haired Bat roosting against reddish tree bark. The bat has dark fur heavily frosted with silver and large, slightly rounded, dark ears. A label reads “COSEWIC endangered.” Below, text identifies the species as Silver-haired Bat, Lasionycteris noctivagans, and reads: “Widespread, especially near riparian habitats. Where do they hibernate? BC? Montana?” WCS Canada Western Bat Program and Alberta Community Bat Program logos appear at the bottom. Photo: Charles Francis.

Pally Speedpaint. Overlook.

A landscape painting featuring a vast autumn forest out in the distance that fades into a blue horizon. A river comes from the horizon and into a distant lake that continues into another river leading towards the left side of the frame. From the foreground the upper part of a wooden beam railing of a balcony can be seen. A small pallid bat loafs on the wooden beam looking out to the landscape above the tree tops right below them. Up above the blue sky is partially cloudy with some distance clouds and streaks above.

Marginalia of black bat with giant fan like wing.

Another Flying Fox share for baturday. Wild to see the intricate wing structure.

A large grey, rust, and black bat hangs upside down with one wing outstretched. The Flying Fox opens its wing to reveal an amazing leather membrane with veins, arteries, and the long “hand” bones that help the bat maneuver upside down amongst the branches—and fly with little sound.
