The spectacular Ballachulish slate quarries, an unlikely but fascinating visitor attraction. Slate was extracted for over two and a half centuries until 1955; and from 1903 the quarries were served by a branch railway from Oban. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

The Ballachulish slate quarries. The image shows a gravel track leading into the frame from its lower right corner and a sign saying Ballachulish Slate Quarries in the lower left. Beyond some small trees are the rock faces of the quarries themselves with a scrubby hillside above them. The scene is in sunlight.

Cutting and dressing slates in the #Ballachulish slate quarry, Scotland c.1927. Interesting juxtaposition of slate on the roof in the background, metal on the splitting shed (likely because they moved so frequently). #geology #thestoryofslate

The Ballachulish figure which was discovered in a bog at Ballachulish in Inverness-shire. The figure dates to the Iron Age, and was possibly a goddess. Now part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own. #Woodensday #IronAge #Ballachulish

The spectacular Ballachulish Bridge across the narrows close to the mouth of Loch Leven in Lochaber. It replaced a ferry, or a 19-mile detour through Kinlochleven, when it opened in 1975. The ferry slipways can still be seen. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

The Ballachulish Bridge. The image shows a metal girder bridge that starts at the end of an embankment on the right bottom of the frame and extends over a stretch of water to a far bank covered in trees, This climbs to craggy mountains with traces of snow visible. There are some buildings on the far bank to the right of the bridge. The scene is in sunlight.
