The captives’ living conditions were inhumane and degrading. When they’d had enough and retaliated for the abuses (with the help of an actual insurgent) they killed (and rightly so) forty-eight American occupying soldiers.

Context: 2 drunk American soldiers (part of the occupation force on Samar) got into it with a merchant in the village of Balangiga. They threatened to abduct one of his workers.
