Yet as the climate crisis intensifies, climate change seems to be receding from public debate. One reason may be less about denial and indifference than about economics. Many people are being told that reducing economic growth would mean a lower standard of living. But what if degrowth could improve our lives rather than diminish them? Could we slow down and at the same time make more space for community, wellbeing-being, and political participation? This lecture explores the economic and philosophical case for degrowth and asks what a good life beyond endless economic growth might look like. The talk will be followed by an interactive game with the audience that illustrates some of the ideas in practice. Speaker: Dr. Donni Wang Dr. Wang holds a BA in Economics from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Ancient History from Stanford University. Her book Before the Market examines the non-market economy of Athenian democracy. She currently teaches Degrowth in Berlin and also works as an author and illustrator.

Doch während sich die Klimakrise verschärft, scheint der Klimawandel aus der öffentlichen Debatte zu verschwinden. Ein Grund dafür liegt vielleicht weniger in Leugnung und Gleichgültigkeit als vielmehr in wirtschaftlichen Erwägungen. Vielen Menschen wird suggeriert, dass eine Verlangsamung des Wirtschaftswachstums einen niedrigeren Lebensstandard bedeuten würde. Was aber, wenn „Degrowth“ unser Leben verbessern könnte, anstatt es zu verschlechtern? Könnten wir das Tempo drosseln und gleichzeitig mehr Raum für Gemeinschaft, Wohlbefinden und politische Teilhabe schaffen? Dieser Vortrag untersucht die wirtschaftlichen und philosophischen Argumente für „Degrowth“ und fragt, wie ein gutes Leben jenseits endlosen Wirtschaftswachstums aussehen könnte. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag findet ein interaktives Spiel mit dem Publikum statt, das einige der Ideen in der Praxis veranschaulicht. Referentin: Dr. Donni Wang Dr. Wang hat einen BA in Wirtschaftswissenschaften von der UC Berkeley und einen PhD in Alter Geschichte von der Stanford University. Ihr Buch „Before the Market“ untersucht die nichtmarktwirtschaftlichen Strukturen der athenischen Demokratie. Derzeit unterrichtet sie „Degrowth“ in Berlin und arbeitet außerdem als Autorin und Illustratorin.

What gives us a sense of security at a time when security is increasingly linked to rising defence spending? What does it take to achieve peace in our everyday lives? With ‘Layers of Peace’, we want to explore precisely these questions on various levels. Be it in society, in our relationships, or within ourselves. An afternoon full of performances and workshops, where we’ll come together to create space for exchange and new connections. 👉 We’ll be presenting the workshops in detail over the next few days. Stay tuned! 👉 21 September is actually World Peace Day, but as it falls on a Monday this year, a full-day event is being organised on the Sunday before – the day of the AGH Berlin elections – to start a conversation right now about peace, participation and our society.
