They changed a person's gait, and gave their words an unmistakable limp. Only after they were broken in and well-used did lies soften, until eventually they could be laced on and worn without even a thought. Rook wore hers like it was a personally tailored shoe she'd been walking in for twelve years. The sheer perfection of it was like a wake-up slap. Rook spoke neither too quickly nor hesitated over it for too long. The pause of time to consider, compose, and answer was flawless. Aside from himself, of course, Calien could count on two hands the amount of Crows he knew who could tell a lie like that.

Fanfic excerpt by took, zine writer: Lucanis cannot remember the last time he was touched so gently. There are a few memories he has from before the massacre that he is reminded of. A few memories of being carried in Sabina’s arms, laughing as he ran from open arm to open arm. Affection came freely then, kisses to his forehead and cheeks and always demanding, “Up! Up!” from whoever would listen. He remembers playing in the yard, running after the ball that Antonio and Cato passed between them and laughing uproariously when they’d invite him to join the game despite nearly being the same size as the ball. He remembers when Illario and Elene would come over and play too, the three of them running through the halls of the manor, bare feet padding against the carpet. Caterina was less harsh then. She smiled at them. Lucanis remembers–though he doesn’t know if it is a false memory or not–that Caterina even snuck them candy before dinner once.
