Ursula and the Little Ice Age

Altai princess,
Ice-staunched in her
Coffin fashioned from larch,
Turns her horsehead east -
Turns her horsehead west.

Stunted rainfall -
Withered pastures -
Turn the Hunnic horseheads
East to Han China;
Turn the Hunnic horseheads
West to Cologne.

British princess
Turns her snow-globed brow
East to Jerusalem;
Turns her snow-globed brow to
Slaughter on the Rhine.

Ranks of maiden valour -
Genuflected, hand-held -
Praise God as
Arrows mow them down.

Ranks of maiden valour -
Eyes rime-beaded under
Domed foreheads –
Coffined now as
Ice-staunched relics in
Cologne.
