Playtesting the toon board just now. One airglow.run automation on a memo.dog test account: every humidity reading from the sensor board on my table becomes a toon, and the 🥵 flies across the top lane every ~5 s. The live data lane is the same board. #ATScience #IOSP2026

The toon board wall: a large sweating-face emoji in the top lane, and a thermometer with a satellite dish in the live data lane.

Got a breadcrumb from myself, as a test 🍞 Next week at the #ATScience workshop #IOSP2026 in Leiden anyone can do this: tap, log in with your handle, and the next person's tap links back to yours.

7 NFC keyrings, 10 QR cabochons, 20 cards, station magnets and wood disks.

breadcrumbs.network

1. Table of breadcrumb parts: cord spools, wood disks, magnets, an NFC keyring, a card, and four glass cabochons with blurred QR codes.
2. Clear acrylic keyring with a round NFC sticker inside.
3. Two grey NFC magnets with smiley stickers: one with headphones, one with hands over its eyes.
4. Two wood disks with black ATScience stickers, an uncovered disk, cord spools and two smiley NFC magnets.

Sorry, no photos, but @lorenzspreen.eurosky.social can confirm it was real. I hope everyone who scanned the QR code finds something useful in what we're building with #ATScience. You're welcome here! Find us: atproto.science · Next time I'll bring a bigger print 🌱

Closing slide of the ATScience station slideshow: “Join us. Ask us about open science on open infrastructure.”

Philipp and I kept passing the ball.

Science ecosystem on open social networks? "That's what Torsten is building with #ATScience."

New feed algorithms? "That's what Philipp is building with Eurosky and SPRIND Funken money."

Apparently a bunch of enthusiasts can build this. 🌸🧪🌀

Quadrant 4 of the poster: “Rebuild social media in the lab, test it in the wild”. Research on social media is stuck behind platforms' closed doors. On an open protocol, researchers can rebuild the feed as a controlled experiment and test bridging-based ranking on Eurosky with SPRIND and TU Dresden's Computational Social Science group (SynoSys). One QR code links to the Eurosky announcement of BridgEU.

So @emily.space was right to build @aster.id without academic institutional buy-in.

Ignore #ATScience at your peril!

Quadrant 3 of the poster: “A home for researchers on the open web”. Aster gives you an account and a Personal Data Store that you own at you.aster.id, and works with every Atmosphere app. It's non-profit and free forever, hosted by Modal Foundation on Eurosky's tech stack, live since 30 September. One QR code links to aster.place for sign-up.

Fuller: build a new model that makes the old one obsolete. McLuhan: the car "abolished the horse and did what the horse could never do." Is #ATScience a new model or just a horseless carriage? And if new, do the DSA and political action become obsolete? I think not, and this is the movement part.

Saw the trailer for the first time just night and I hit pause & rewind to tell me wife in a state of high excitement "that's where I had my #atscience workshop!!!"

@mathewlowry.eurosky.socialOct 4, 2026, 8:09 AM

... I go to @roomy.space, where @ronentk.me, @wesleyfinck.org, @byarielm.fyi, @emily.space, @gui.do, @tgoerke.bsky.social & everyone else in #atscience hangs out, to tell them about the Belgian railstrike and... has my phone been hacked, or are the trains really out to get me?????

Absolutely amazing news for the #ATScience community. This is an extremely helpful medium to empower and promote the work of researchers across the globe.

It's time to place research back into the hands of the people who make it happen.

@mathewlowry.eurosky.socialOct 1, 2026, 11:25 AM

The whole verification issue is such a can of worms. There's the way W does it (terribly!), but there are better ways, but even they come with price tags. Exploring this with the #ATScience crew for the @aster.id launch yesterday, if you're interested: blog.aster.place/3mwqlbu2q3c2b

Exciting. If you're a researcher and still don't know about about #ATScience, it's time to get up to speed by reading this thread and following the accounts mentioned.

@ronentk.meSep 28, 2026, 2:06 AM

This is fantastic! Imagine how cool it would be to have a version only for all the science conversations 🤯

#atscience idea: a service which helps scientists do this for every paper.

@tgoerke.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 2:48 PM

Did this for the handouts for noizetoyz. Our #ATScience workshop with IOSP soon in Leiden/Netherlands. Also the OLED status icons are made like this* noizetoyz.atproto.music

*vibe coded

Next step is have a robot make the actual wiring on the hardware.

Also thinking through a tiered trust model for an #ATScience community labeler. What's your specific interest in Jev for T&S?

@tgoerke.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 8:40 AM

Told my team today: academic cooperation needs to break out of institutional jails and build new institutional bonds instead. A shared vision shouldn't stop at the institutional boundary. Then my notifications saved my day — back to actual work, with #ATScience folx, not the farce of trad science.

@tgoerke.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 6:17 AM

Also this post by @julietshen.online on Jev for T&S sparked my interest to use it for judgement / decision tasks.
I am now toying around with the #ATScience community labeller idea. Sharing my moodboard for "Atmospheric Evidence Signals" @breadcrumbs.run

Very cool project connecting atproto with the Underlay knowledge graph protocol

"[The Underlay] is an archive. [atproto] is a wire. Together they give a collection both permanence and real-time distribution."

And check out these neat #ATScience examples too!

www.underlay.org/blog/2026-04...

Concrete examples
A research lab runs a PDS using custom lexicons for their experimental data and publications. The bridge watches their repository and pushes daily snapshots to mylab/datasets on Underlay. The PDS is the lab's active workspace. The Underlay collection is the permanent, citable archive.

A journal pushes article records to Underlay through its publishing platform. The bridge writes each new article to a PDS. The journal's output is now part of the AT network, discoverable in any client that understands the lexicon. A Bluesky user can follow the journal's DID and see new articles in their feed alongside social posts.

A library wants to preserve a set of public collections. It runs its own Underlay instance and mirrors them. It also subscribes to the AT Proto relays for those accounts and indexes the firehose for its discovery interface. Same data, two access patterns: archival via Underlay, real-time via AT Proto.

My angle is Folk Tech: communities configuring their own AI tools as an act of collective self-determination, not a tinkering niche. As LX Cast @questioning.ca it when we talked in Vancouver right after #ATScience: "We are just folx." More once the paper's out!
