A silver lining finds its way through the darkest clouds.

A low-angle, vertical shot of a bright sun shining through a dramatic break in heavy, dark grey storm clouds. The edges of the clouds immediately surrounding the sun display a vibrant, rainbow-like iridescent glow with hints of pink, green, and yellow. The sky visible in the lower break is a soft blue.

I was out for a walk this afternoon and spotted what I think is a Sun Dog in the sky.

At UBC, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Photo: The picture is mostly sky with the flat roof of an apartment building just showing at the bottom of the picture along with the tops of a four trees. In the sky is a cloud that starts narrow at the bottom of the picture and gets wider a the top. The cloud is wispy and see through. At the lower third mark is a an almost straight white horizontal line that goes from one side of the cloud to the other. At one quarter along the length of the line from the left side is a very bright spot slightly bigger than the width of the line - this is the Sun Dog.

A Sun Dog is caused by ice crystals in the cloud refracting the light of the Sun. The almost straight white line is also caused by this refraction.
