Recognizing Asthma Peak Weak. Every year, globally, the third week of September brings the highest number of asthma-related hospitalizations among children.

But why does this happen, and what can educators do to manage triggers and attacks?What causes Asthma Peak Week?
According to Asthma Canada, Asthma Peak Week is caused by several lifestyle and environmental changes that accompany the return to school. Following a summer in which asthma management is often more relaxed, children in school environments are exposed to a range of asthma triggers and allergens, as well as viral infections. Did you know? Up to 85% of asthma attacks are triggered by viral infections, with the common cold responsible for up to 60% of these attacks. (Asthma Canada)What can educators do to manage asthma triggers and attacks? Remember to review each student’s Plan of Care or Asthma Management Plan to identify triggers and strategies to manage, reduce, or eliminate asthma triggers. When exposure cannot be avoid, make sure to plan alternative activities that everyone can participate in.
