Kali, the wrathful protector India, Malavli, Maharashtra ca. 1910–20 Kali—astride Shiva’s prone body, attired in a skirt of severed arms, and garlanded with human heads and hibiscus—boldly confronts the viewer. She brandishes the head of a decapitated demon and gathers his blood in a bowl for drinking. The terrifying realism of this representation held great appeal; the print became one of the most popular works published by the Ravi Varma Press.
