In addition to the gilded gold leaf, the ceiling is decorated with painted designs. Black-and-white daytime photograph of the Chattanooga Airport terminal in Chattanooga, Tennessee, shortly after its completion in 1933. The building is a striking example of Art Deco airport architecture, with a symmetrical composition, strong geometric forms, flat roofs, and a tall central section rising above the entrance. The central tower contains a large vertical bank of multi-pane windows extending through several floors and is flanked by lower rectangular wings. The main entrance is centered beneath the tower and consists of large dark double doors, with small wall-mounted light fixtures on either side. Rows of rectangular windows extend across the lower wings, with small newly planted evergreen shrubs lining the front facade. A curved gravel or paved driveway leads toward the entrance, while a landscaped area bordered by rocks appears at the lower right. The flat airport landscape is visible behind the building. The photograph documents the terminal's original 1933 appearance and its distinctive early-1930s Art Deco design.Black-and-white nighttime photograph of the newly constructed Chattanooga Airport terminal in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1933. The Art Deco terminal is brightly illuminated against a dark sky. The main building at right is a white, geometric, multi-level structure with a prominent central tower featuring tall, multi-pane windows and projecting rectangular sections. The lower wings contain rows of rectangular windows and doors. Behind and to the left is a long, lower airport building or hangar, with the word “CHATTANOOGA” prominently displayed on its front. A long line of evenly spaced lights extends into the distance along the edge of the airport facilities. The broad concrete apron and roadway occupy the foreground, reflecting some of the artificial light. The photograph emphasizes the terminal's modern Art Deco architecture and the dramatic appearance of the airport at night.
