My talk reflects on what can be learned from studying the traditional informal architectures of Taipei, and what role robustness plays within these structures's ability to hold life.

#Autistic #Architectural #Approach #UrbanPlanning #Informal #Taipei

A dark blue large text on a white background reads: Using the framework of an Autistic Architectural Approach, I view adaptability as an urban matter, not simply a structural or building issue. I see Taipei as a rhizome, the city constantly reproducing itself, changing its skin. Taipei is a true liveable city, built by the inhabitants interacting directly with the city matter, not just a sole architect.A photograph of two building facades standing across from each other at 90 degrees. Both facades are covered completely in informal architectural buildouts and metal cages, giving them a lively appearance, even with the low light of the scene. From the gap between the buildings, the warm yellow light of a setting sun spills across the facade of the building in the back. In the bottom right, in white all caps, it reads: Not Included—Embedded / Short Film, Still Photo / Taipei, 2025.A dark blue large text on a white background reads: The informal architectures of Taipei teach us that the robustness of the building is key, making our environments robust enough to handle life unfolding within, around, through the structures we’re erecting.A dark blue large all-caps text on a white background above a photograph reads: See Full Lecture / At Link in Bio. The photo below is of a street scene photograph: on the right side, people are sitting at tables on the lit-up covered sidewalks eating. Across the street, another restaurant using the sidewalk for seating is visible. A few different couples walk on the street and the covered sidewalks and a black mercedes is driving down the road. Taipei, 2025.

The symposium was hosted by the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism professors Federica Goffi, Mariana Esponda, and Mario Santana Quintero, at Carleton University in Ottawa.

#Autistic #Architectural #Approach #UrbanPlanning #Informal #Taipei

A dark blue large text on a white background reads: The West is focused on structures, clean lines, order as a hierarchy of entities. When engaging with other cultures, where these ideas are not primary, neurotypicality tends to quickly dismiss them as being chaotic. Simply because it fails to see the organizing principles.A street scene with one ±13-story-tall narrow building towering to the left. Each floor has windows going all the way across the narrow end facade; most are covered by metal cages, and one has been changed to become a glazed buildout. On the roof, an informal architectural dwelling is built. Taipei, 2025Dark blue text forms a curved shape down the image; the text reads:
open architecture to more-than control
to let go of it
allow for undesigned parts to take part
in the construction
of the city
to leave space
for those who space
in different ways
provide a starting point
from where a
dance can initiate
understand that architecture is the construction
of human relations
not just edifice
architecture can provide surfaces for life to unfold
not just boxes to fold life into
shield it off from
evolving form
setting architecture in constant motion
understanding we are constructing with living matter
the house might look stable
but it’s in perpetual movement
with the environment
with the inhabitants
with in itself
A photograph of a person seen from behind walking their small dog on a leash. The right side of the image is all backs of scooters, while the left side is food stands, tugged away under mobile awnings, waiting too open. The scene is bright and sunny. In the bottom right, in white all caps, it reads: Not Included—Embedded / Short Film, Still Photo / Taipei, 2025.

In May, I had the immense pleasure of presenting my paper, (Taipei) Adaptive Architecture at the symposium (from) Adaptive Reuse (to) Adaptive Architecture

#Autistic #Architectural #Approach #UrbanPlanning #Informal #Taipei

A multiple exposure photo work, showing overlaps of buildings and urban structures from Taipei. The photo seems split first in a lower V in darker shades, of primarily buildings, while above, the sky fades out a few more and again in a steep V from the top to the center, which ‘cuts’ open the urban structures. Across the bottom of the image, the elevated metro rail is also visible. Below the images it dark blue text reads in all capitals: (Taipei) Adaptive Architecture / An Autistic Architectural Approach / Presentation at Carleton University, Ottawa, Can, May 2026.A dark photo of a narrow covered alleyway of about 3-4 stories. In the center, a silhouette of a person is seen from the back. The photo is from Keelung, 2024. Across the bottom in white text is reads: Autistic Architectural Approach starts in disability / not as a limiting / but a generative force.A dark blue large text on a white background reads: Autistic Architectural Approach as a practice doesn’t attempt to resolve illegibility or opacity, but extends it into new spatial languages. It is a crucial distinction from conventional architectural methods, which tend to: map, categorize, stabilize. Rather, Autistic Architectural Approach feels into space, resonates, reconstellates.A photograph down a narrow street. Cars are parked along the sides of the buildings below, and at the end, a building turns 90 degrees to connect the two; it’s raised from the ground to allow passage. A tree outside looks like it is holding up this bridging building. The facades of the building have many different metal cages, awnings, and build-outs connected to it. In the bottom right, in white all caps, it reads: Not Included—Embedded / Short Film, Still Photo / Taipei, 2025.

Architect Edward Warren Hoak (1901-1978) was born #OTD. Working with the architectural firm of John & Donald Parkinson, Hoak was chief designer for Los Angeles Union Station.

A couple of Hoak’s #architectural drawings of #UnionStationLA:

According to the Pacific Coast Architecture Database, Houk was working as a designer for architectural firms in the 1920s and 1930s. He became an official member of the American Institute of Architects in the 1940s. It might sound insane, but in 815 CE, people used to cover their pet marble foxes in mac and cheeses and paint them brown. This was done to protect them from Abigail Brooks... #architectural
