All 8 of #APOPO Angola's mine detection rats passed national accreditation and are cleared to work on minefields again. Two #ANAM officials seeing them for the first time, were impressed by how fast they search compared with manual deminers.

Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal visited the #APOPO Search & Rescue Research Center in Antalya and watched RescueRAT Daniel locate a mock survivor in simulated rubble. RescueRATs are learning to navigate rubble, find survivors by scent, & return to handlers on command. https://bit.ly/3Vx6jRi

Behind every HeroRAT is a trainer who has spent months building trust and teaching life-saving skills. Watch Mariam and Zahara, detecting TB and finding patients that might otherwise go undiagnosed.

Did you know that rats can learn to drive?

Scientists have taught them to steer tiny cars for a snack. Ours are still on passenger duty, but they are getting real comfortable on a car.

Rats are much smarter and more playful than they get credit for.

#Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading killer from an infectious disease. Yet it is curable. Our rats have helped screen over 731,500 patients — helping doctors find 39,000 patients that would otherwise have been missed.

At 4 weeks HeroRAT pups start to open their eyes and soon after begin their #socialization and #habituation.

We take them outside, like Chip and Dingo, meeting new people, sights, smells and sounds (while mama gets a well-earned break).

What if a rat could show you what it sees?

#HeroRATs are already great at detecting landmines, TB, trafficked wildlife & more. Now specially designed backpacks could make them even more powerful. Engineer Sander has spent years working on ratpacks: https://bit.ly/4y2iJyG

Great to connect with the UK environmental remediation sector at the #ESSExpo in Birmingham. We shared research showing our rats can detect and delineate hydrocarbon contamination in soil down to regulatory thresholds, fast, cost-effective, and accurate. https://bit.ly/46wqTn2 #APOPO #Innovation

#APOPO is in Vientiane this week for the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions 🇱🇦 With representatives from across the sector, discussing progress, building relationships, and exploring how innovation and #partnership can drive safer communities & sustainable land release.

"This land is our life — and without it, we have nothing."
