This week: 2 new books on the slavery & #antislavery in a transatlantic context
Briget Bennett's book "Antislavery in the Dissenting Atlantic" traces the influence of the Moravians, Quakers in favour of (British) #abolitionism & highlights the work of women activists
It was on this day that the U.S. Congress agreed to the compromise of 1850.
It made California a state – importantly, a free state. It also took a third of what had been Texas and designated that land as the new territories of New Mexico and Utah. 🧵
On this day in 1838, Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery.
This was not his first attempt to free himself, but thanks in part to Anna Murray, the woman Douglass fell in love with, it was successful. 🧵
