Let slip the dogs of war...

Despite several attempts to persuade the Army of dogs’ usefulness to protect ammunition dumps and factories against potential German saboteurs, Lt-Col Richardson complained that his ideas were “not in any way understood” and that he could “make no headway”. Instead, he continued with his own “private experiments”, training the dogs in ever more sophisticated manoeuvres.

Eventually, individual officers began to request some of his dogs for sentry and patrol duties. In winter 1916, he began supplying troops with messenger dogs to keep up communications between the trenches, when heavy bombardment prevented telephone messages getting through and the risk to runners was too great.

“They were used to send messages about reinforcements, artillery, and the situation at the frontline,” said Prof Bosanquet. “Soldiers would put a message on the dog’s collar – “Send artillery” – and then the dog could travel a couple of miles in 10 minutes.”

The first trials were a great success, and the dogs were praised by a colonel for travelling 4,000 yards over “exceptionally difficult terrain”.

Within days, the War Office finally relented, allowing Lt-Col Richardson and his wife to begin training hundreds of dogs in Shoeburyness for service. Soldiers were sent to the school for a five-week course in handling the dogs, before taking them to the front.
