Slow stalking is how Anhingas hunt underwater, using keen eyesight before a rapid thrust of their neck and bill. Spotted at Lakes Park today. Did you know their partially wettable feathers absorb water, which helps reduce buoyancy and allows them to dive more efficiently? #FloridaWildlife #Anhinga

Anhinga at Lakes Park: Did you know its prominent bright yellow mandibles can serve as a visual signal that intensifies during the breeding season? These "snakebirds" frequent open water year-round for hunting fish in freshwater habitats. #SWFLwildlife #Anhinga

A little portrait I made of an Anhinga I watched @ Long Key Natural Area. The headwear (Swamp Milkweed & Buttonbush) is from our garden.

Per Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is
#WingsOpenNotFlying, birds with their wings open when not flying.
The Alt theme is #Blue, any bird with Blue in its plumage.
#anhinga #birds #waterbird #nature #wildlife #thelittlethings #ECK #Stunday #photography #BlueSkyMonday 🕊️

An anhinga is standing on a concrete slab with its wings spread out to dry. Its head is turned to the side and you can see its blue-green eye and pointed brown beak. Its neck is brown and the body is black with white feathers on its wings that look like silver. A turtle is sunning next to it. There’s a gray tree branch protruding from the blue-green lake water.
Interesting information:
The anhinga is a large, slender water bird known as the "snakebird" or "water turkey"that inhabits the warmer swamps, rivers, and ponds of the Americas.
Adult males are glossy black with silvery-white streaks on the wings and back; females and immatures feature a pale tan or light brown head, neck, and breast.
They possess a sharp, dagger-like bill, a long S-shaped neck, and a wide, fan-like tail.
Unlike most water birds, anhingas have wettable plumage and dense bones, which help them sink and maneuver underwater.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #TheDivers. Here are four diverse divers. #PiedBilledGrebe #Anhinga #DoubleCrestedCormorant #CommonLoon. #birds #diverse #diving

Helen set #TheDivers as today’s #BirdOfTheDay challenge. Here are three of my favorite divers I usually see in Florida. #PiedBilledGrebe #DoubleCrestedCormorant #Anhinga #birds #WildlifePhotography #ECK

The pied-billed grebe, a small brown duck-like bird (and one of my personal favorites) floats on blue water. The water is so still it acts as a mirror, reflecting the bird perfectly. There is a bit of green vegetation in the lower left corner. The double-crested cormorant is a charcoal colored bird swimming partially submerged im gray water. It has a bright yellow pouch before its hooked beak and a brilliant green eye. There are ripples around the bird, and blurry vegetation is visible on the bank in the rear of the photo.A male anhinga stretches its wings to dry them after a swim. The bird is black with some white accents. His yellow beak is long and sharp. The wind has ruffled the feathers on his head, giving him a bit of a faux-mohawk.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #Mouthful with the Alt theme #Black. This is a twofer as a male #Anhinga swallows a fish bigger than his head #birds #finedining #fishdinner

Here's a #Black&White anhinga for today's #BirdOfTheDay by Rob

I've gotta get back out to the wetlands soon but it's just too dang hot here right now. 😀

Today' #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ABCD: any bird names beginning with any of those letters.

This anhinga is showing off his wing spread. Purty! 😊

Today's #BirdOfTheDay, I understand, is #ABCD any bird starting with any of those letters. So here's a picture of an #Anhinga practically tying its neck in knots.

Per Helen @helenbennett.bsky.social, today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BirdBuddies, two 'different' bird species sharing the same space. Alt. Is #BirdsInGreen, any shade of green on a birds plumage.
