#AndroidDev, either it's like trying to hit a moving target as the platform is constantly changing, or it's like being on an abandoned ship as the proper docs are absurdly missing. 6+ years since the issue was reported, and we are still supposed to guess that MaterialDatePicker uses UTC timezone.

25 seconds of my pomodoro app ☕

Recent Compose improvements show how quickly declarative UI continues evolving. The future belongs to tools that make iteration faster without sacrificing quality. #Compose #ComposeMultiplatform #AndroidDev

Most of my product sheet mirrored into Arabic on its own. Not the share card. It's drawn on a Canvas, so Compose can't flip it for me and it reads the direction itself before the render. Digits stay left to right, as they should. Does your Canvas get told the direction too? #AndroidDev

Two phone screenshots side by side on a dark background. Left, the app's product sheet in English: a product icon with the label Product, UPC-A at the top left, the title Diet iced tea with its barcode number, an orange chip reading Recall reported for some packages, then the rows Recall reports, Ingredients and Nutrition per 100 g with their chevrons at the right, and a Search this product button. Right, the same sheet in Arabic: the icon and the title at the right, the action icons and the chevrons at the left, the barcode number still left to right, the dates in Arabic-Indic digits.

Modern Android apps are built around better architecture, better testing, and better developer tools. The boring improvements are often the ones users feel most. #AndroidDev #SoftwareArchitecture #MobileApps

Watching F-Droid rebuild my app from the tag in under eight minutes and match the APK I'd signed still surprises me. Quicker than I'd have guessed for a bare machine fetching its own toolchain. Three releases in, the match has held, and they ship my signature on their build. #FDroid #AndroidDev

A bar chart on paper grey titled F-Droid's rebuild of 1.1.0: seconds by phase. Five horizontal bars: Debian packages 92, Rust toolchain 15, source and scan 11, Gradle with the Rust core 346, setup and wrap-up 14. Two lines beneath: their build log of 2026-10-05, 11:11 to 11:19 on the server's clock, under eight minutes in all; the Gradle step holds the cargo build of the core for arm64.

My pomodoro app finally has a What's New screen ☕

Until now, updates shipped quietly. Now each one opens with its new wallpapers drifting through the top, then the notes.

the newest alpha release of beeline, the fediverse client, showing different layout shapes - for a passport-shaped foldable, a narrow remote-shaped foldable, and for a regular shaped phone.

Set my test phone's theme to Wallpaper and the app turned it down. The palette would blend with the warning chips, so the teal stays. I hadn't expected it to fire. It checks the containers against the danger and caution fills by hue, then RGB distance. #AndroidDev

Two phone screenshots side by side on a dark background. Left, labelled theme set to Wallpaper: the app's Settings screen, the Theme row reading Wallpaper with the line This wallpaper's colors would blend with the warning chips, so the teal stays, then the Language and layout rows. Right, labelled the teal it kept: the Create screen with the Your card banner and the New code grid, all in teal. Footer: Pixel 7a, the Settings and Create screens under the Wallpaper theme.

Eighteen characters come off a door-jamb VIN label, an I ahead of the seventeen. My own car's label read as text at first. Two pixels a bar on a wavy label, and the long Code 39 came back exact on the first pass. Add perspective and uneven light and it's gone on both passes. #barcode #AndroidDev

Two panels on grey. Left, labelled rendered: a long Code 39 barcode, the eighteen characters of a VIN label. Right, labelled two pixels a bar, wavy label: a simulated phone photo of the same barcode on a white label lying on a wood desk, the bars bending in a gentle wave. Below: read back I1M8GDM9AXKP042788, exact, and the line own decoder, first pass, exact.

Google Antigravity can take an Android app from prompt to real phone.

The agent pulls your designs from Stitch using the Stitch MCP.

It builds native Jetpack Compose components and verifies them in the emulator.

Then it runs the final build on a real device.

Just over four and a half million products in my lookup copy, cut into eight thousand files. A scan fetches one of them, picked by thirteen bits of the barcode's hash. Last night's refresh touched all but twenty-eight files. I hadn't expected a change that wide. #barcode #AndroidDev

A browser window showing the products lookup copy's live manifest as raw JSON on a dark background: format 1, database products, version 2026-10-08, generated at 03:53 UTC, expires 2026-10-22, cadence daily, bits 13, shards 8192, subtables 64, records 4578451, changed shards 8164, then the columns list from number, source and lang through the product's name in eleven languages to nutriments, label and serving fields, then lines per number one and the start of the tables list with a sha256 and a byte count for each file.

Scrambled the whole timing pattern of a level L QR code and both readers still read it. Put a white blob on one corner square at level H and neither got anything. I'd always thought of that dotted line as load-bearing. It isn't. #QRcode #AndroidDev

Two QR codes side by side on grey under the title What a QR reader needs, and what it doesn't. Left: a level L symbol whose timing pattern, the dotted line between the corner squares, is fully randomised; the captions say zxing-cpp read and the app's still path read. Right: a level H symbol with its top-left corner square erased by a white blob; the captions say zxing-cpp no read and the app's still path no read. Footer: QR damage corpus, 768 cases, CC0, gitlab.com/verdettoqr/barcode-damage-corpus.

Two pixels a bar under a diagonal camera smear, and I'd expected nothing back. The edge finder found no edges. The second pass guessed the blur and fitted a model of the bars under it to the smudge. HELLO-2026, exact. I didn't believe it until I'd stared at the capture a while. #barcode #AndroidDev

Two panels on grey. Left, labelled rendered: a Code 128 barcode drawn small, two pixels per bar. Right, labelled sampling-motion-diagonal: a simulated phone photo of the same barcode printed on a tilted white label on a wood desk, the bars smeared diagonally into a soft grey texture. Below: read back HELLO-2026, exact, and the line own decoder, forward-model read, exact.
