World War II, the first movie theater at Fort Richardson, later called the Chugach Theater. As with most base buildings during the war, note it was camouflage painted. And we know this was successful because no buildings were bombed there. #alaskahistory #alaska #anchoragehistory

In 1971, the Anchorage city council passed an ordinance banning "bottomless" performers. As the sassy, anonymous Daily News reported noted, "Bottomless dancers aren't really. Only their costumes are." A lot of legal battles followed. #alaskahistory #alaska #anchoragehistory

In Sep 1947, the first parking meters were installed in downtown Anchorage, with enforcement beginning Sep 29. On the below token, the 1920 date is when city incorporated. Anchorage had parking meters four years before New York City. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory #alaska

On September 12, 1966, the Lane Hotel in Anchorage was torched by serial arsonist Charles Thessen. Fourteen people died, the deadliest fire in Anchorage history, the deadliest mass homicide in Alaska history. Thessen was killed in prison. #alaskahistory #alaska #anchoragehistory

Anchorage Memorial Cemetery gravestone for Pinkney McMahill (1847-1936). He ran away from home at 14 to enlist with Union in Civil War. Saw extensive action & nearly lost a leg. Survived, became prospector, & moved to Anchorage in 1917. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory #alaska
