Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Green, any birds or backgrounds that have green in them. This molting #AmericanGoldfinch was busy eating from seed pods along the trail (Concord, Massachusetts - 9/2/26) 😍💛🍃

A molting American Goldfinch with a drab greenish head and back, black wings and tail, and still some yellow on its chest, was pulling seeds from green seed pods on green Evening Primrose plants. There were green leaves and a few pale red leaves and stems around the bird. Seen next to the Dike Trail at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

For today’s #BirdOfTheDay main theme, #BirdSupermodel (strike a pose) and alt theme, #UnsungBirds (underrated birds). May I humbly submit this striking female #AmericanGoldfinch for both! The males get much more love in breeding plumage, but the females are great too!

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfTheMonth. I haven't seen many species in Sept., so will go with another male #AmericanGoldfinch foraging along a trail early one morning (Concord, Massachusetts - 9/11/26) 😍💛🪶

A male American Goldfinch with a bright yellow body, black and white wings and tail, and a black cap that extends down to the orange beak. It was very early on a sunny morning, and the sunlit bird was perched among tall green and brown wildflower stalks and was eating parts of the plant. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #EFG, so here's a double G: a #BlueGreyGnatcatcher being photobombed by an #AmericanGoldfinch.

A Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, a tiny bird that is mid-grey on top and light grey beneath, clings to the stalk of a dead plant as an out-of-focus American Goldfinch, a bright yellow bird with black wings, zooms by in the background.

This is the carved female; there's a male on another branch, out of the frame.

American Goldfinches nest later than many other birds. In Vermont, it is not unusual to find a fledgling in September, and even in early October.

Had to give some love to my spark bird before they get into their dull winter plumage. I got lucky to have all three goldfinch species - American, Lesser, and Lawrence’s - at my feeders with their fledglings.

American Goldfinch · № 013

The gold comes and goes: goldfinches molt all their body feathers twice a year, and the drab olive winter bird at your feeder is the same animal as July's lemon-bright male.

A Yellow Plea

I like how the American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) seems to call out to the chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) as it departs. ...

"Only the left edge of a wooden bird feeder appears in the lower right corner of the frame — just a slim strip of weathered wood, barely enough space for a single bird to perch. Balanced on that narrow edge is a male American goldfinch, bright and striking. His body is a rich, glowing yellow, almost like a small lantern against the soft, muted background. His wings carry bold black-and-white patterns, crisp and clean, but his head is pure yellow — smooth, unmarked, without the black cap that males wear in summer.

He’s turned toward the left, leaning forward slightly, beak parted as if calling out — a sharp, urgent note frozen in mid‑moment. His posture feels alert, almost pleading, like he’s trying to get the attention of someone already slipping away.

On the left side of the image, a chipping sparrow is caught in mid‑flight. Its brown‑and‑tan feathers blur into soft streaks as its wings beat rapidly. The sparrow’s tiny feet are tucked close to its belly, and its body angles upward, already committed to leaving. It’s rising away from the feeder, away from the goldfinch, but still close enough that you can feel the connection — a fleeting exchange between two birds, one calling out, the other already airborne.

The background melts into gentle, out‑of‑focus branches and soft woodland colors, making the birds stand out like two small voices in a quiet morning. The whole scene feels like a moment of communication caught just before it disappears — the goldfinch calling, the sparrow departing, and only the faintest sliver of feeder anchoring the moment to earth." - Microsoft Copilot with edits by the photographer
