On this day in 1962, Canada became only the third nation to design, build, and launch its own satellite. Intended to operate for only one year, Alouette 1 continued its scientific mission for over a decade.

A 1966 estimate said Alouette 1 could stay in orbit for 1,000 years. It worked for 10 years and 1 day.

Launched September 29, 1962, it made Canada the third nation to build its own satellite. Switched off September 30, 1972, it is still in orbit.
