Unless you haven't been keeping up with my posts on BlueSky, you probably already know that I've been going through the Compile sh'mup catalog, primarily the likes of their flagship Zanac/Aleste series. In the midst of this, I finally decided to import the Nintendo Switch version of Aleste Collection, developed and published by the incredible M2 back in 2020 in Japan. That collection includes all the Sega 8-bit Aleste games (Aleste/Power Strike, GG Aleste 2, Power Strike 2, and GG Aleste 2) plus the M2-developed new title GG Aleste 3, portly perfectly and with all the custom options and gadgets you'd expect from an M2 Shot Triggers release. What's especially great is that M2 made sure to correct the speed of Power Strike 2 for NTSC. You see, Power Strike 2 was made with the European market in mind despite being developed in Japan since it was a late release for the Sega Master System (1993 to be precise). So, Compile timed the game and its music for PAL consoles, so playing it on an NTSC Master System or Mega Drive/Genesis will make the game run too fast and make the music play at a crazy speed (120% speed since you're going from 50 hertz to 60 hertz). Aside from freeware emulation and a fan mod made last year by JOAOM2006, Aleste Collection is the only way to play the game at the correct speed unless you got a PAL console (and the best way to play it overall cuz of the M2 gadgets). I managed to beat that game in the collection this past week (it's very nice; I recommend it), and I figured I'd cover its Stage 1 theme since it sounds very nice (as per Compile's other game music) and it's a largely unknown game that deserves some more attention (then again, that can be said about most of the games I've covered music from over the years). I didn't really have any particular sound or style in mind, so I figured I'd just settle with the ol' reliable, AKA the Namco C30 WSG in Furnace tracker. I will say that I had a bit of a hard time trying to decide how to arrange this …
