The Ensoniq EPS-16+ eventually burned out, so I got myself an Ensoniq ASR-10. It is my favorite instrument to this day.

It still start a lot of songs on it and sync it to my DAW.

Not long after that, I bought a used AKAI MPC 2000xl. The sequencer was better than anything I had used before. I figured out how to hook the EPS-16+ up to it with MIDI!

The Yamaha PSR-270 got me down the path of learning piano scales/chords.

Then I discovered Sonic Foundry Acid Pro v2.0 on computer, which opened a lot of doors! It was my first "DAW". I could paint on the screen with MP3 and WAV samples!

Next I got a Yamaha PSR-270 keyboard. It only came with General MIDI sounds. A 6-track sequencer. You could only do linear track recording. No looping! I just made step sequences that went from point A to point B. Or used the karaoke machine to loop!

It's easy to find interviews online now with many great producers like Q-Tip, Questlove, DJ Premier talking about using the "pause tape" technique in the 80s/90s, long before I figured it out.

I must have read it somewhere back then.

I was hardly online at the time.

I knew maybe one other person that had a 4-track cassette recorder.

My first "music equipment" was an Optimus karaoke machine! I would find samples on cassettes, radio, movies. If I found a good loop, I would record it from one cassette to the other, pause, then record again to make it repeat!
