A practical prioritization strategy for vegetation-focused restoration of anthropogenic wastelands

By Erika Stewart, Joshua Grinath & Kathryn Turner

doi.org/10.1002/ajb2...

#botany #plantscience #ecology

An anthropogenic wasteland restoration framework depicted as a heatmap for assessing priorities and management strategies for wastelands in local proximity to high-quality habitats from low to high (x-axis), and landscapes that are unfragmented (low fragmentation) to highly fragmented (y-axis).

In vitro propagation of woody semi-mangrove species is often constrained by explant contamination, browning and stage-specific morphogenic responses. The authors examined how explant developmental state, basal-medium strength and plant growth regulators affected in vitro establishment and regeneration responses in Heritiera littoralis.

"Ferns, marsupials, and Darwin's Wedge: Does competitive displacement really explain macroevolutionary patterns in #ferns?"

doi.org/10.1002/ajb2...

#botany #plantscience

Unfurling fronds of Struthiopteris spicant in Northern California. Many lineages of ferns went extinct in the Paleozoic, but as a whole ferns have persisted for nearly 400 million years, and extant ferns have expanded into nearly all terrestrial ecosystems. Describing the cones & seeds of extinct #conifer species---using CT and 3D visualization---that co-existed with the dinosaurs 150 million years ago in what is today the state of Utah.

New #AJB research by @mariahmhowell.bsky.social et al.

Exposure to heat waves & #drought improves subsequent leaf heat tolerance for five #oak species in southern California

By Casey Wisely et al.
doi.org/10.1002/ajb2...

#climatechange #botany #Quercus

A figure summariing leaf heat tolerance, represented by T 50 (the temperature at which the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II is reduced by 50%), for five species of oak tree native to Los Angeles County, California, USA that received either regular watering (plain bars) or reduced watering (diagonal bars). Measurements were made before (April) and after (September) multiple summer heat waves, which increased the leaf heat tolerance of all five species, particularly those with evergreen leaves.

Native common reed - Phragmites australis subsp. americanus Saltonst., P.M. Peterson & Soreng, Colorado River, Grand Canyon National Park, Mohave County, Arizona, September 7, 2021. Present in the Grand Canyon for more than 40,000 years, native Phragmites has established itself as a key ecological component of desert wetlands and an important cultural species for many southwestern Native American Tribes. At present, the Grand Canyon region and a hydropower dam are supporting large, diverse native Phragmites populations, but these are threatened by the recent arrival of the invasive subspecies, Phragmites australis subsp. australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (Image credit: E. Palmquist.)
