New #aDNA paper! 💀🧬

Ancient DNA from colonial Montréal challenges narratives of a French–Indigenous “admixed founding population”—narratives that continue to shape false-Indigeneity debates today.

Our study of Notre-Dame Cemetery finds exclusively French European ancestry.

Erbgut aus alten Knochen kann viel darüber verraten, wie Menschen in der Steinzeit gelebt haben, ob sie verwandt waren und ob sie Krankheiten hatten. Wie das funktioniert?

An important passage hitting on the centrality of the Justinianic Plague in these new debates about the "Fall" of Rome. A warning: some of these "debates" are overblown. I still recommend Sarris 2022 (n. 100) as the clearest-eyed assessment of the issues. #histmed #aDNA #LateAntiquity #MedievalSky

An extended quote from p. 13 (online preprint):
"Partly because of this challenge, the degree to which ecological events can explain major political and even religious changes is hotly debated.99 The Plague of Justinian is perhaps the most controversial of these events, provoking a slew of publications arguing over its overall impact.100 Discussions of long-term impact also extend to questions of climate. Tracing volcanic eruptions or fluctuations in temperature starts to impact our understand- ing of the sixth century in particular.101 While some of these attempts can contribute to the search for the ‘Fall’, there are recent contributions that clearly misunderstand the interplay between sciences and historical hermeneutics.102 Discussion of the impact of climate and nature has entered a problematic phase where historians are often deliberately left out of the discourse.103 Fortunately, there is already a theoretical discussion under way on how the dissonance between methods and discourses can be bridged and made productive.104 The ‘Fall’ then appears as a protracted event."

Ever wanted to map sequencing data to a reference genome super easily with a single command?

I have, so I made a tool for it.

PlainMap handles mixed SE/PE, different FASTQ formats, modern + #aDNA, pilot testing, and restartable runs then gives you a BAM + stats.

3-year #PhDposition at the @univie.ac.at within the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology to work on #ancientpathogen #aDNA!
The starting date of the position is flexible, with a latest possible start in mid‑December 2026

FWF FUNDED 3-YEAR PHD POSITION IN MICROBIAL
PALAEOGENOMICS OF HUMAN PATHOGENS (ANCIENT DNA)
We invite applications for a fully funded 3‑year PhD position in Microbial Palaeogenomics
within the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology, University of Vienna . The successful
candidate will conduct palaeogenomic research within the project “ Surviving into Adulthood ”
funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) under the supervision of the principal investigator
Meriam Guellil. Core of the project will be the study of microbial pathogens from ancient DNA.
The doctoral project will encompass:
● Processing of osteological material within the dedicated ancient DNA laboratory at the
Department of Evolutionary Anthropology (from sampling to library building and target
enrichment).
● Sequencing and metagenomic screening of aDNA genomic libraries for the presence of
pathogenic microbial organisms.
● Phylogenomic and evolutionary analysis of microbial genomes reconstructed from aDNA.
● Multidisciplinary synthesis of gained data within the wider spatio-temporal and cultural
context of sampled populations and the project.
Candidate requirements:
The successful candidate must have acquired a master's degree in a relevant field (Microbiology,
Biological Anthropology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, etc.) by the start of the position and ideally
has experience working with ancient DNA or within the multidisciplinary framework of
bioarchaeology. They need to be willing to work in the laboratory; prior experience is a plus,
although training will be provided. Experience in bioinformatics and NGS data is desired and
basic command-line knowledge is required. Excellent written and spoken English is necessary.
The candidate is expected to be able to perform independent research following initial …
