Marie Renaud, Alberta NDP Shadow Minister for Community and Social Services, spoke today alongside Kristi Hall-Busque and her son Ben Hall-Busque. "Ben is fully dependent, uses a wheelchair, and requires overnight nursing care. We were told directly that he was considered employable, and I still can't wrap my head around that," said Kristi Hall-Busque. "The obstacles we've faced over the last few months have been dangerous, cruel, and completely unnecessary."Page 2 of the Alberta NDP news release. Text: As always, after significant public pressure and media attention, Ben's family was informed this morning that the decision had been reversed and that Ben had been approved for AISH following a review. While the family welcomed the decision, they said it does not erase the months of uncertainty and barriers they faced navigating the process. "The UCP promised Albertans with disabilities they wouldn't lose support under this transition," said Marie Renaud, Alberta NDP Shadow Minister for Community and Social Services. "Yet we're hearing story after story from Albertans with disabilities who have lost benefits or spent months living with uncertainty while trying to navigate a broken system." "Ben's approval today doesn't change the fact that a young man with disabilities was initially deemed employable. Families should not have to request reviews, fight government decisions, or go public to access the support they are entitled to.
