πŸ’‘ FUN FACT FRIDAY! πŸ“Ίβ™ΏοΈ

In 1980, closed captions required a special TV decoder!

Today, they help deaf and hard-of-hearing people, language learners, and anyone watching without sound.

πŸ€” Do you use captions? Why?

#21stCenturyDisability #FunFactFriday #AccessibilityMatters #ClosedCaptions #Inclusion

Colourful Fun Fact Friday graphic comparing closed captioning technology from 1980 to today. On the left, a vintage wooden television displays captions and sits above a separate closed-caption decoder. On the right, a modern smartphone displays a video with captions. Large lettering across the top reads β€œFUN FACT FRIDAY!” At the bottom, bold text asks, β€œDid you know closed captions once required a special decoder?” The graphic highlights how captioning technology has evolved and become more widely accessible.

Bob, the Mission: to make Craters of the Moon more accessible.
#AccessibilityMatters

Graphic of a cartoon pika in a space suit.
Mission: to make Craters of the Moon more accessible.
Bob, a pika in an astronaut suit, was developed as the mascot for Descriptathon 11, part of the UniDescription Project. This university-based research initiative focuses on improving audio description processes and products to enhance media accessibility for people who are blind or have low vision. Through this project, a team of 10, including National Park Service employees and volunteers worked to fully audio describe the Craters of the Moon brochure.

Bob now has a new mission: to make Craters of the Moon more accessible. Currently Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve has two waysides on the Devils Orchard Trail with tactiles for those visually impaired, with Bob’s help we hope to increase that number and begin new projects with accessibility in mind.

Every purchase made in the Craters of the Moon Natural History Association Bookstore and the online store that features β€œBob” goes towards accessibility projects throughout the
Monument. Accessibility is about finding ways to ensure every visitor who comes to the Monument can experience it and enjoy it; with Bob’s help we can make that a reality.

Using all capital letters can slow reading and can confuse screen readers.

πŸ”Ή Words lose their shape.
πŸ”Ή It can look aggressive.
πŸ”Ή Use bold or colour instead.

A black and white dog looks towards the camera with its head turned slightly away. The dog is wearing a baseball cap backwards. The text in the graphic is repeated in the caption, plus gives an example of two lines of text that are difficult to read when entirely in capital letters.

Pro tip before you go: Download the KultureCity app to review their social story with your child. Seeing photos of the entrance, pathways, and quiet spaces ahead of time helps build a safe mental roadmap for the day.
