Edmonton’s public school board will examine its registration policies to see if there’s leeway within its mandate to make it easier for migrant students to enrol. It’s in response to concerns about kids unable to attend school due to immigration status #Ableg #abed

Good for EPSB for passing this policy. We should be educating all kids #ABLeg #ABEd

An update: the Edmonton public school board passed the motion to examine registration policies, and may make recommendations to align them with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (if that's in the board's authority).

Timeline unclear: chair Saadiq Sumar says it won't rush this work. #AbEd

If you are a family in this situation, or an educator/admin with knowledge of enrolment denials at a school, please contact me - it can be confidentially.

To date, much of the advocacy - from immigrant-serving orgs and school boards - has focused on amending Alberta’s Education Act.

I asked the minister, and he has no appetite for that.

Doll says boards instead should look at what *is* in their sphere of control.

Sarah Doll, an Edmonton school trustee, is asking whether that school division can change its registration policies to admit children, regardless of their or their parents’ immigration status. And if they’re charging tuition, can they perhaps tailor the amount to the situation? #AbLeg #AbEd

In B.C., Quebec, Ontario - and the U.S., thanks to a Supreme Court decision - children are entitled to a funded public education regardless of their immigration status.

This is not the case in Alberta

However, a school board can enroll the child and either charge tuition or absorb the cost. #AbEd

We asked 10 Alberta school boards if they know how many students didn’t re-enroll this September because of students’ lapsed immigration paperwork. In many cases, no. They don’t have complete information.

Here’s what we know about the current situation: #AbEd #AbLeg

Please spread the word ... Albertans need to speak out loudly about this injustice & cruelty.

If you're going to interview Parents for Choice in Education, maybe note for context that they are a lobby group with close UCP ties that was behind both the opt-in sex education policy, and the school library book bans. #ABEd #ABLeg

Alberta teachers - especially in social studies - are grappling with how, and even if, to talk and teach about the October referendum. Here’s why: #AbLeg #AbEd

Good News Alberta!

We found a way to raise tuition for programs we don’t like!

If you want a degree in arts, philosophy, or environmental studies, we’re going to make YOU pay for it!

In a UCP Alberta, we don’t want students who think for themselves.

The head-scratching life of a Calgary public school parent:

Email notification of a single case of head lice.

While at the same time:

Illness outbreaks only need reporting if 10% of the student population are sick enough to stay home.

And the school board forbids HEPA filters. 🤬

Cost for referendum $134 Million (Elections Alberta)

Support remaining in Canada 70% (Janet Brown)

22% binding referendum on independence.(Janet Brown)

$26.50 for every Albertan
(Alberta Fact Check)

Instead $134M could buy 430 teachers positions for three years.(Alberta.ca)
