Up on the timber floor above the crushing plant of the Tsudō Ore-Dressing Plant, part of the Ashio Copper Mine in Tochigi, Japan, an old desk fan stands where it was left, framed against the valley. The three earlier dressing works were consolidated here in 1922.

Somebody's television, still on the floor of a company house at Nichitsu Mining Village. Nitchitsu built the whole Ogurawa settlement in this Saitama valley, housing, clinic, bathhouse, school. Metal mining ceased in 1978.

The chair was still turned to the light in this room at Seika Dormitory (清華寮) in Bunkyō, Tokyo, a book left on the table beside it. When I photographed it in 2012 the building was sealed and empty. It was demolished the year after.

Someone put a slide in the grass here for the kids of these apartments at Hon-cho, Yubari. The block was boarded and empty by the time I photographed it. Yubari ran on coal until the last mine shut in 1990, and the housing outlasted the work.
