TIL about the #89PercentProject! 🥹🫶

#ClimateActionNow

The "89 Percent Project" (Covering
Climate Now Ă— Oatly)
What it is: A global collaborative journalism initiative launched by Covering Climate Now, a journalism nonprofit. Its premise: a 2024 peer-reviewed Nature Climate Change study of ~130,000 people across 125 countries found 89% of people want their governments to do more on climate - yet most assume they're in a minority ("pluralistic ignorance"). In the US, 66-80% of people actually support major climate policies, but Americans perceive only 37-43% do. The project's theory of change: if people knew they were the silent majority, political demand for climate action would rise. (AP via San Diego Union-Tribune)
The news this week: Oatly, the world's largest oat-milk producer, printed the campaign directly on its cartons - a small box telling politicians that
"eleven words represent people not interested in climate action," next to an 89-word message making the majority case. Launched in Sweden, now in Belgium and Germany, expected on US shelves by January. Partners include The Guardian, AFP and El Pais; Japanese broadcasters and 136 Japanese outlets have also signed on.
