Day Thirty of #30dhs2k26: 172/100

Man even re-reading this piece back makes me all misty-eyed for real for real. I probably will continue to make a variation on this format every year to sum up my thoughts at the end. Castle's muse is perfect for that.

It's almost surreal that it's over...

And so it ends.

Perhaps not as ecstatically as in times past, but it ends nevertheless. The urge to do more was all overwhelming but I am one man with one pair of eyes and one set of hands - as the moth fluttering in my ear reminds me. I did what I set out to do: I wrote. I wrote and I read and I changed what I could and inspired who I could. In all metrics, accomplished. Perhaps that feeling will rise to meet me once I rest.

I no longer am doing this alone, with minds and hands just as capable as mine assisting in ways that leave me misty eyed and endlessly grateful. For this journey could not have been accomplished without them. Thank-you is not nearly powerful enough to convey the gratitude I have, but thank-you is all I have.

I have learned and I’ve grown and I can prepare for the next time so that when the journey begins once more I can happily take it…

…again.

Day Twenty-Nine of #30dhs2k26: 1043/100

Another long one but I couldn't help myself - this scene is so fucking good! The pacing is a little rushed but that's simply because I am Running Out of Time. Gods I love these two so fucking much...

The Solar Solstice. The holiest holiday for those who worshiped Eros, Creationists and Radiant alike. Moorwart - like any town that had a large Creationist population - was abuzz with festivities to celebrate the longest day of the year. Puritanical compared to what was rumoured the Radiant partook on a day like today - she was the Goddess of Desire after all.

Maybe it was that rumour, maybe it was just because as much as he tried Isaac couldn’t stop that man from invading his thoughts, but Isaac found himself outside of the abode that housed those Roderick had successfully converted to becoming an Acolyte of Her Radiance. He leaned on the facade of the building across from it, looking down at the makeshift church as if the building itself would tell him its secrets.

“If you are so interested in Her Radiance, Hunter, perhaps you should join us.” Isaac started, reaching for his weapon reflexively before being met with the curled smile of Roderick.

“Fuck, Crow.” Isaac massaged at his jaw as he stared the other man down.

“Mmm, an interesting choice of words.” The grin was masked slightly by the visage of his goddess, but Isaac felt himself scowl in return. “But of course there is no need. I assume you are here to make sure we are protected from those in the town that might… uh… take issue?”

Isaac wasn’t before but he was now; he gave a curt nod in response. “Ah good, good.” Roderick replied but he took a pause and a look into the middle distance before speaking up again. “On days like today, my Goddess is… distracted.” He turned his eyes back to Isaac. “She is not as… interested in taking on new worthy souls into her dominion. There are many to satisfy her today.”
Isaac frowned with some confusion but Roderick didn’t seem to be waiting for him to respond. “May I ask if Agape is as… vigilant? Is a day like today something that weakens him or…. Does he reach to his Blessed Hunters in forewarning?” There was an odd hush that had come over Roderick’s voice, aided by how rushed he started to say it. “That is to say… is the Frenzy strong with you today, Hunter?”

Isaac paused and thought about it. Some days the Frenzy was unbearable, usually corresponding to the moon’s cycle or the presence of Corrupted Beasts in the area. But he had never felt the presence of the Frenzy on the Solar Solstice. “No. He’s satisfied.”

Roderick grabbed Isaac’s arm and the Hunter nearly pulled away in alarm. “Then… then perhaps…” There was a hushed wonder to his voice as he pulled Isaac down the alley between the houses.

“Crow?” Isaac asked as if it was a full question.

Roderick stopped partly down the way and swiftly removed his hood and the visage of his goddess, dangling the latter around his neck as he often did when he was indoors. His whole face spoke of nervous excitement and Isaac was growing more concerned. “If my Goddess is distracted and yours is weakened I… Then perhaps this is our chance.”

“For what?” Isaac wasn’t sure what Roderick was even getting on about.

Roderick looked one part worried, one part amused. “Please remove your mask, Hunter.”
It hit Isaac at that very moment. He had long thought more than the briefest of contacts with Roderick were off the table once he learned exactly how the Acolytes of Her Radiance were bound to their Goddess. Likewise, the Frenzy might as well consume and destroy Roderick in response - an outcome stained both ways. But what Roderick was suggesting… if both gods were truly distracted.

Isaac undid the clasp for his mask and quickly pinned it to his caplet he took a step closer to Roderick who looked at him with a devotion he was sure was only reserved for his goddess. Isaac cupped his hands around the face that he swore haunted his every waking moment, trying right now with his newly found closeness to commit the pattern of his vitiligo to memory. With a shaky breath, Roderick crowd closer to him and as he pushed to close the distance breathed out in a desperate plea “Per favore.”

Who was he to deny him?

As their lips touched Roderick’s light touch on his outfit became fists filled with leather and fabric, urging their bodies closer. Isaac devoured into him, cradling that beautiful face - only now regretting not removing his gloves. It felt like hours and mere moments all at once when Roderick pulled away with a gasp, raising his hand to stop Isaac’s face from chasing after him.

“No, no… we… we cannot chance it.” He was breathless, his entire face flushed. Isaac felt the smallest stirring of Frenzy at the sight.

Those amber eyes closed for a brief second, but he didn’t let go of the other man. “A moment more.” He pleaded.
There was sadness in Roderick’s eyes as he thumbed at Isaac’s own face. “She might be distracted, but those who worship her will quickly notice my absence.” He spread his hand and cupped Isaac’s face in return. “This is what I will think of tonight and for all of my nights to follow.”

“Roderick…” Isaac went to pull him in again but Roderick’s hand tightened in warning.

“One day.” Tears welled into those beautiful eyes. “One day when our fates are no longer bound to the gods. When their quarrel is ended and they have no need for us” Roderick pulled away from him and Isaac almost went to pull him back. The other man quickly busied himself with putting back on his mask and hood.

Isaac stood there, regretting the emptiness of his hands, watching Roderick turn back into the pawn for his goddess. But before Roderick could say his goodbyes, Issac spoke up. “Uh… Fausto solstizio…?” He knew he mangled the pronunciation as soon as the words left his mouth.

Roderick paused and looked back at him with both mild confusion and mild awe. A smile pulled up from under that mask. “Grazie alla Dea.”

Isaac blinked at the response causing Roderick to laugh with a genuine laugh - it was a wonderful sound. “Happy Solstice, Hunter.” he said instead.

Day Twenty-Eight of #30dhs2k26: 1032/100

TW: Gore. Longest piece I've written during 30dhs and I'm proud I got there at last! Used like three forms of touch in here because I just can't ever get enough of these two!!! Star-crossed yearning indeed : ) Even the gods keep them apart!

Isaac had never seen this many Corrupted Beasts in one place before; it was as if Agape’s grasp had tightened on every creature in the surrounding Hartwoods all at once. The screams of the townsfolk were background noise to the Frenzy beating in his ears. Rip. Rend. Hunt. He let the “blessing” guide him to the next Beast, his scythe gorging into horrific creatures with a self-satisfying ripping noise. His blood sang for more.

Isaac found himself standing near the town’s Creationist church between breaths when the Frenzy was quelled enough to give him his awareness back. What an ironic sight: Agape's own Blessed Hunter standing on the steps of his former lover’s church, the Corrupted Creatures blood spilled like a stain on her sanctuary. Isaac let his scythe sing as he spun it round to clear the viscera that had collected there.

Then he heard a familiar shout.

His head - and regretfully his jaw - snapped towards the direction of the sound. Amber eyes alighted on a Beast perched on a nearby balcony, attempting to break its way into an abode. But before the Frenzy could completely take him once more, a cold chill flooded his system.

There barricading the door, in nothing but simple night clothes, was Roderick.

“No.” He snarled and he went leaping towards the Beast.

The creature, amalgamation of flesh and bone that dripped with viscous blood, managed to force Roderick away from the door by the time Isaac landed on the balcony. Isaac couldn’t keep the snarl from his throat as he yelled “Don’t you fucking touch him!” at the Beast.
The Beast turned at the noise and was instantly met with the wrong side of Isaac’s scythe. The Hunter slashed at the Beast before wrenching the head of the damnable thing off with another clean slice. Viscera splashed back on him and as he stood above the unmoving creature - he wiped it off his brow.

Roderick was splayed out on the ground from where the creature’s forcible entry had caused him to fall back. He was up on his elbows, chest heaving as he stared up in sort of awe at Isaac. As the Frenzy was appeased a little, Isaac finally took in Roderick. That was the least amount of clothing Isaac had ever seen him in, even if he was still completely modest. His face was not a foreign concept to the Hunter, but he was so used to seeing the heavy cloak and mask that Roderick wore that he felt as if he shouldn’t be seeing Roderick in this state.

Roderick got his wits about him first. “Are… are you hurt?” he managed.

Isaac, in lieu of responding with his voice filled with slowly rising Frenzy, shook his head.

Roderick rose to his feet and looked at the remains of the Beast on his balcony and bedroom. “It is gone?”

A silent nod.

“Let me get you a cloth… You are covered in… Addia…” Roderick, still kind of dazed, wrung his hands out and went to busy himself with fetching a cloth.

Isaac stood there a moment, unsure if he should just leave but before he could make up his mind Roderick was back with damp cloth in hand.
He stepped as close as he dared to the viscera in his room and went. “Come here?” with a small gesture.

Isaac, like a man possessed, stepped in closer. Roderick tentatively reached with the cloth and wiped away the viscera that had stained his face. The cool damp water was a balm to the hot stickiness of the Frenzy broiling just below the surface. Deft fingers slowly reached up to undo the mask that covered his jaw and Isaac reflexively grabbed his wrist. “Crow.” It was a little bit like a growl.

“Hunter, it is the least I can do for you since you saved my life.” There was a calmness to his voice that did not leave room for argument. Isaac let go, leaving a stain of crimson on Roderick's pale, two-tone skin. The other man ignored it, freeing Isaac from his muzzle.

Isaac knew the Frenzy didn’t have any physical changes to his face except the glow of his eyes, but Roderick looked at him as if it did. And maybe with Roderick’s own blessing from Eros… perhaps he could see something the Hunter couldn’t. “Oh Hunter…” It was a sigh of concern.

Roderick gently pressed the cloth all over his face and for a moment Isaac wanted to press closer… but it was more than just his face covered in the blood of the Beasts and he couldn’t bring himself to mar such a beautiful sight.

It was over far too soon as Roderick removed his hand, the white cloth he had fetched soiled in crimson. He wrung it in his hands for a moment. “I am unsure if it was my goddess or your god who sent you here… but whoever did…” there was a breath. “It does not matter. I am grateful it was you.” There in those icy blue eyes that pierced into his soul, was an emotion that Isaac wasn’t sure if he could place. Awe was the closest thing his mind could come up with.
The Hunter felt the twinge of Frenzy in response, a burning in his chest that threatened to rise out like bile. But instead of the mantra to feast, to kill… he desperately wanted to reach out and pull Roderick into an embrace. Sink not metaphorical fangs into his skin, but drink deep of him regardless. Isaac’s grip tightened around the scythe as his other hand rose to his chest. “I need to go.” He forced out - afraid of what the Frenzy might morph into if he did give into that urge.

Roderick took a tentative step back. “Go. If any can save all of creation from these Beasts it is you, Hunter.” He offered a small smile and while Isaac was used to those lips curling in such a way, he didn’t often get to see the kind eyes that went with it.

With a deep, centering breath, Isaac pulled his mask back on his face and jumped back out the window.

Day Twenty-Seven of #30dhs2k26: 338/100

It's about time I wrote about Roderick and Isaac! I love these two so much... but nothing really clicked for me with them this year till now. This is very much like the piece from last year but eh... I like this set up lol

“Buona Sera, Hunter.” Isaac closed his eyes briefly at the familiar sound of Roderick’s voice. His nerves were on fire, and hearing the other man speak felt like one part comforting oasis and one part painfully grating.

“Crow.” His voice came out a little more gruff than he meant it, barely looking up at the other man.

“Oh? Is something the matter, Hunter?” Roderick’s entire head tilted, the mask he wore with his goddess’s visage almost looking comical at that angle.

“Don’t.” Being a Hunter of Agape came with the “blessing” of the Frenzy: a singleminded focus to hunt, rip, and rend abominations that threatened creation. It got worse during the full moon, when Agape - the Moon Himself - was strongest. That was tonight.

There was a soft tutting noise at Isaac’s biting reply. “Dia mia, Cacciatore…” That was one of few select phrases that Isaac could understand in Roderick’s native tongue. There was probably as much disappointment in Roderick’s - unimaginatively pretty - blue eyes as there was in his tone, but Isaac was quite glad he couldn’t only see the small part of the man’s face. Said part pulled into a sort of frown as he continued. “You are clearly struggling, why must he harm you so?”
“Crow.” Isaac’s patience was as thin as his nerves. “I don’t need the god talk tonight.”

“Ah, no.” Roderick nodded slightly. “You are right, you do not. What you need is relief - and I can provide that.” A small smile.

A scowl crossed Isaac’s face but Roderick held his arms up defensively. “No, not the relief my goddess provides… no no no! But instead something to ease the pain of the Frenzy. You have seen me do it before.”

Isaac remembers the time that Roderick had given him a blessing, how it was sweet relief from this very same ache that he had now. Honestly? If it could work again… maybe it was worth the try. “Fine but… make it quick?”

A sweet smile pulled up on Roderick’s face. “Of course, Hunter.”

Day Twenty-Six of #30dhs2k26: 206/100

If you thought I wouldn't use my fictional government agency as a backdrop to criticise, you were sorely mistaken. Syrus has always been the kind of character that works in the system to hopefully one day change it.

The principles that the DAP were founded on seemed to change with every hand over of the government. Sure they were supposed to operate independently of the governments direct control - less one president decided releasing some of the worst monsters known to man on the perceived enemies was a good idea. But at the end of the day, their purpose was mostly decided by who was in power. And even if the President couldn’t decide directly… he could have a hand in deciding who could.

Outside of maybe the military, the DAP was probably the most well armed. They operated in a para-military kind of way - and honestly the President didn’t really need two of those did he? But thankfully this one wasn’t turned on civilians (yet) - its focus was exclusively on eliminating monstrous threats. And the degree of capture over kill did change with the government's stance on violence. Sure there was plenty of it even with the best of the presidents for this was America after all, but in the 15 years Syrus had worked for this Agency… he had seen the changes over and over again.

He worried about the day that the “Rescue” part of his division was nowhere to be found.

Day Twenty-Five of #30dhs2k26: 248/100

I took this prompt a little too literally... And was also inspired by one of my players wearing a Muse shirt to meet Syrus specifically so I could roleplay about Muse music (I love them for this). This one *doesn't* have spoilers, Noodle.

“Urg. I swear this song has played five times since we’ve been in your fuckin’ car, Sy.” Kit flopped slightly on the passenger seat of the government vehicle that they were driving in.

Syrus looked at the stereo which displayed “Mercy / Drones / Muse” on it. “Uh… no I don’t think we’ve played a Drones song on this trip?”

“OK then can we play anything other than this fucking band?”

“Look I just put on my playlist and it’s… sorry it is mostly Muse songs, I don’t listen to much music.” He detached his phone and tossed it over to his partner, who smoothly caught it. “Just play something you want. Make a Kit friendly playlist if that’s easier.”

Kit looked at Syrus kind of baffled for a moment. Syrus snuck a swift peek over when he felt the eyes into him. “What?” The older agent asked.
“You’re gonna just let me make a list of songs?”

“... Yes? I was playing music just so it wasn’t silent on the drive. If you don’t like my music… then make one you’d like?” Syrus kinda shrugged at the windshield.

“Huh. Thanks.” Kit kind of looked despondently down at the phone for a moment before typing in some songs. After a few moments of typing they looked up. “Hey uh… what's your favourite Muse song?”

Syrus raised an eyebrow and shot them a brief glance. “Plug in Baby… why?”

“No reason.” Kit responded as they added Plug in Baby to the list.

Today's prompt inspired by how stressed I've been at work lol. Though Emil is FARRRR worse than I am when I snap at my coworkers for things like this. Let's not feel that bad for him, *his* response isn't called for.

“Hey Doc are you bu-”

Emil slammed down the report on his desk interrupting Detective Nicolae Riviera’s question. “What about ‘do not interrupt me’ does no one in this damn precinct understand?” Emil's voice was ice cold as he glared daggers into the detective.

Riviera looked somewhat offended at that remark. “This is why I was asking, Doc.”

“What is so important that you had to break the one thing, the one fucking thing, I asked of all of you today?” Emil’s anger and frustration were both palpable, even though his voice did not rise in volume.

“Nothing apparently, sheesh.” And Riviera left Emil's doorway.

Emil gripped at the edges of his desk and took a deep breath to try to calm his fraying nerves. Idiots. He worked with a bunch of fucking idiots.

Day Twenty-Three of #30dhs2k26: 404/100

There is like one line that's spoilers, sorry Noodle.

I'm actually happen I managed to write two back to back scenes the last two days. It's been a struggle for me to get back to form and I'm happy I got this out of it!

“Holt?” Syrus turned towards the sound of the voice to see his Supervisory Agent, Al West, making a beckoning motion with his hand as he leaned partially out of his office.

Syrus pushed himself away from his desk, frowningly slightly at the gesture. Maybe I'm actually being assigned a case?

When he entered West’s office he was confused to see someone else standing there. They were a wiry, barely twenty-something kid with light blonde hair. They stood at attention something akin to a soldier, looking slightly uncomfortable in their suit. Warm brown eyes met his coal coloured ones and they had a somewhat distant but determined look on their face.

“Holt this is Probationary Agent Kit Sparks. Sparks, this is Agent Syrus Holt, your new partner.”

Syrus froze slightly, when he was introduced as this kid's partner. It had been barely two months since Mic had died and they were already dropping a new partner on him? Let alone a fucking kid?

“Sorry, what?” Syrus interjected, not looking at Kit. “I hadn't asked for a new partner yet.”

“You've been asking for assignments, Holt. This is your assignment: You are to evaluate and watch over Agent Sparks as they learn what it means to be a DAP agent in the Search and Rescue Division.” West did not look at him, he was too busy filing paperwork.
Syrus took a deep breath to steady his anger and looked back at the kid. They met his gaze instantly, their eyes narrowing slightly as if trying to evaluate him.

“This is not the assignment I meant.” Syrus huffed out, almost defeatist. “I have no experience training young agents.”

West, to Syrus's surprise, laughed. That caused both sets of eyes to flicker back over to him. He smiled as he put his pen down and looked up at the two of them. “McAllister said the same thing to me when I assigned you as his partner.”

That caused Syrus to freeze slightly, remembering a mostly still traumatised younger him standing in this very office being assigned to Mic. He slowly looked back at Kit, the Agent still hasn't said a single word to him. Perhaps they were traumatised too. “Alright kid. If we're gonna be partners I better show you around this place. Gotta show you where to get the actual good coffee.”

Kit blinked at him and then gave him a little smirk. “I don't drink coffee.”

“Jesus Christ, doc.” Detective Wesley Forbs literally turned himself away from Emil when the psychologist decided to touch - with a gloved hand - the eviscerated body in front of him.

“CSU already got their photos, Forbs.” Emil responded somewhat detached, gently poking at an organ that Forbs wasn’t fond of figuring out which one.

“What…? Yes I know that!” Forbs looked back, baffled for a moment before it dawned on him. “I don’t have any issue with you poking her because of evidence, doc! She’s just… her insides are on the outside and why are you touching it?” Forbs nearly hissed the last part because Emil full on lifted up one of the organs.

“The killer didn’t just disembowel her… he carefully removed and placed the organs in a specific way.” Emil looked up at Forbs and slowly put down the organ he was holding. “I was touching them to make sure there wasn’t a message.”

“Yeah shouldn’t we leave that to the M.E.?” Forbes asked incredulously.

“And the days it will take for the report to come back in place of me just looking at it now? No thank-you.” He rolled his eyes and went back to looking at the organs below him. “If it’s such an issue for you, Detective, I’d advise you to wait behind the tape until the M.E.s come back.”

“I think I just might…”

Day Twenty-One of #30dhs2k26: 166/100

I know the Equinox is technically tomorrow, but I thought it was today so have some rambling about what it means in one of my favourite lores : ) I need to run a ttrpg in this setting for SURE

No one really celebrated the Equinox anymore. The strain between the Sun and the Moon had gone so deep that the holidays that originally existed to celebrate them both had schismed into two separate holidays.

The early fall holiday still had some appeal, the final day of the Sun being the dominant in the sky and the first day before the Moon was. Each celebrated in somber and joy respectively. But the holiday was to celebrate the two heavenly bodies being equals as they always were and that fall and winter were the Sun's chance to rest so the Moon could watch over creation. And vice versa in the spring and summer.

But those who considered it anything else were ousted by their own faiths, for could you not see what the Sun has taken from us? Can you not fear what the Moon brings? To speak of fairness is unfair for both - such is how creation was poisoned by the fight between the two gods.
