Book 62
The Stake by Richard Laymon

⭐⭐

Released in 1990, this has not aged well at all. Not really a vampire story as the cover suggests although there is a vampire in it. It's about a sexual predator and an author in love with a corpse.

Book 58
Snow by John Banville

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Stars off as a typical "body in the library" crime novel, turns into something much more disturbing as the story unfolds.

Book 57
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

⭐⭐⭐

Some tough themes... Racism, mental health, suicide, parental abuse. Sprinkled with lots of goodness & life affirming moments. I think the movie is better.

Book 56
The Furies (Charlie Parker #20)

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Two short novels in one book. The Strange Sisters & The Furies. Both very good, but perhaps lack the depth of one full novel. A bit like opening a box of Celebrations & it's 50% blue Bounty.

Book 55
The New Life by Tom Crewe
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fictional account of the life of John Addington & Henry Ellis who wrote the book "Sexual Inversion" in the hope of changing society's view of homosexuality in Victorian England.

Book 54

Witch Light by Susan Fletcher
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

So beautiful, so haunting, so moving. Without a shadow of a doubt my favourite book of the year so far.
