Condom vending machines first appeared in Japan in Osaka in 1969 and continued to spread until the early 1990s. Nowadays, they are becoming a rare sight, mostly because people can easily buy them at 24-hour convenience stores.

An aging building tucked between newer structures in a quiet Tokyo backstreet. Rust, concrete, and a few potted plants tell stories that glass towers never could.

Official seals have been used in Japan since the 7th century, but digitization is rapidly eroding their role. This old stamp shop feels like a quiet remnant of that long tradition, standing calmly in the night as the practice fades from everyday life.

The former bone‑setting clinic sits quietly on a corner, its shape recalling old Japanese Degeta‑Zukuri shop architecture. Surrounded by modern buildings, it feels like a small trace of the past, holding its place gently in the night.

An izakaya on Koishikawa’s Enma-dori Shopping Street features a copper-clad facade. Though dark, you can see copper panels even beneath the large “Enshuya” sign. Popular around 1930, this architectural style suggests the building may date back to that era.

This building once stood on Jimbocho’s Suzuran-dori. Facing the street, Hinoki Gallery was a modern structure adorned with Art Deco reliefs, while the building behind it exuded rich history. With its demolition complete, it truly feels like the end of an era.

In Awaji-cho since the late Meiji era, this historic dye shop survived into the 21st century. Nearby Konya-cho was once an Edo-Meiji dyeing hub that declined with synthetic fibers. Though now closed, this shop carried the local legacy for over a century.

Near Shiinamachi Station lies a shopping street that flourished around 1955. Set slightly back from the road, this retro building richly retains its Showa-era charm. Judging by the closed shutters, it appears to no longer be in business.

This former gun shop is now closed. In Japan, gun ownership is strictly regulated, but licensed hunters and clay target shooters can buy rifles, shotguns, and air guns. With only about 13 shops currently operating in Tokyo, it was once a rare find.

A standalone early Showa-era building in Kita-Ueno, Tokyo. Its horizontal-lined facade and classic wooden lattice doors showcase timeless craftsmanship. Standing amidst modern updates, it offers a striking contrast that speaks to the city’s evolution.

A photo studio built in 1930. The building has a great atmosphere with stylish modern windows. It no longer seems to be in business, but old photos of Ome were displayed in the window.

This 1970s tonkatsu eatery was renovated into a guesthouse. Its tiled walls reflect a common design for mixed-use buildings of that era. The sliding front door has an older feel, suggesting it was added during the renovation.

This building was once home to "Kitchen Maro," a local Western-style diner that closed in 2023. By the time I stopped by, the awning and sign were gone, replaced by a demolition notice—just standing quietly, waiting to be torn down.
