Top White House advisers have privately warned President Trump that the war with Iran could continue through the rest of his term, potentially extending beyond January 2029, despite his public claims of a swift victory, WSJ reports.

VP JD Vance, Secretary Marco Rubio, and other officials have discussed the possibility that Tehran could continue resisting U.S. pressure under the blockade and military campaign.

U.S. officials are also increasingly concerned about Iran’s ability to adapt its attacks and reconstitute its supply of missiles, drones, radar, and other military equipment.

Trump privately pushes for a quick end to the war but also supports a long-term economic siege aimed at forcing Iran to dismantle its nuclear program.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is preparing for a prolonged U.S. military presence in the Middle East, with some air-defense units having no set withdrawal date. Around 50,000 U.S. troops remain deployed across the region, alongside ongoing rotations of Marine and Air Force units.
