Working my way through old #Stockport newspapers, and I'm in June 1917. Along with those recently killed in action are guys "missing" since July 1916, whom the Army now assume killed. But there are no bodies, no eye-witnesses, so do familes accept, or cling on to hope? #WWI www.heatonsww1.com

110 years ago today, Oct 15, 1916. My great-grandfather’s company marched out of Albert at 8.30. He went ahead to look for billets, and wrote:

“Bunked in a shack & jolly cold too.”

The effect of generative AI seems comparable to the impact of the invention of the machine gun. Soldiers must have felt so effortlessly productive when they first got their hands on the new tool. And its output was objectively, measurably higher.

It is #WomensHistoryMonth! Edith Rayside was a nurse. She served in #WWI, helped enhance the educational standards and professional appreciation of nurses, and advanced the recognition of women’s place beyond the gender boundaries of her day.

Loch Leven, 1898. On the right is #Glencoe House, built in 1896 by Donald Smith (later Lord Strathcona). It became a convalescent home for the wounded during #WWI and an auxiliary hospital during #WWII. It remained a hospital until 2009 and is now a hotel

An order to design a tank was given by Italian General Julio Martini #OTD in 1915. This work eventually led to the creation of the FIAT 2000 heavy tank. This was an advanced tank for its time, but it was finished way too late to see battle in the First World War. #tanks #history #WWI #WW1

My great-grandfather, Andrew Murray Robertson, kept a diary through WWI, Feb 1915 to Dec 1918. He enlisted as a gunner, was commissioned, won the Military Cross with the Canadian Engineers, and was wounded twice. Diary and letters, day by day: robertsondiary.com

You corrected me on #BigBen, #GuyFawkes, #WWI and England vs Britain vs the UK. I read your notes out loud on camera.

#TIL During WWI, German troops paused in Champagne cellars to drink captured wine, which slowed their advance and contributed to delays in the 1918 spring offensive.

British nurse Edith Cavell was a #WWI resistance leader.

She ran escape lines from German-occupied Belgium saving ~200 Allied soldiers. Betrayed by a collaborator, she was arrested, tried, and shot by a German firing squad #OTD in 1915.

Quote from the eve of her execution. #WomenInHistory #HistSky

Black-and-white graphic honoring Edith Cavell: a formal portrait of the British nurse, wearing a high-collared lace blouse and upswept hair. Beside her, in bold red quotation marks, her famous words: “Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone.” The quote is attributed beneath in white text: Edith Cavell. The background fades to black with a thin red border on the left.
