#WordWeavers 17/10: What is the worst possible first impression someone could get of your MC? Would it be accurate?
For Jerya, in the second half of her life, it would probably be to be judged on her acquired rank—as if she were just another hereditary…

#WordWeavers 16. What is one choice your MC made for the right reasons that ended up having terrible consequences?

Giving the artist explosive diarrhea. It ends with an artwork that sells well.

In Three Kinds of North, Jerya not only walks away from the Guild of Dawnsingers, she takes Railu with her. One result is that Railu…

#WordWeavers Oct. 15: What piece of backstory did you invent just for yourself that readers may never learn?

My WIP is based, as far as possible, on psychology and science so that's more a selection process than an invention so all I did was read about the brain and the development. I am not […]

What piece of backstory did you invent just for yourself that readers may never learn?

Plenty of things that didn't need to be on the page.

1. The same incident is behind the events of both disOrder and Pure.
2. The Ash Winter mentioned in The Horror in the Snow was caused […]

#WordWeavers 15/10: What piece of backstory did you invent just for yourself that readers may never learn?
I wouldn’t use the word ‘invent’ for any of it, whether backstory or ‘front story’. There are all sorts of short pieces, some of which could be…

#WordWeavers Oct 14: If your MC could ask their future self one question, what would they ask?

Prefrontal Cortex watches their reflection in the mirror with unblinking concentration. 'One question only,' they say. 'Just one.'
The silence grows in the room until they put down the teacup, and […]

Did the cold war end? It looks like it did, if you're here

#WordWeavers Oct 14: "If your main character could ask their future self one question, what would they ask?"

How did we survive? (This applies to more than one main character.)

Though I'll be honest, I'm trying to step down the stakes in my stories.

#WordWeavers 14/10: If your MC could ask their future self one question, what would they ask?
In the course of the current WIP, Jerya turns 70; from the perspective of the 19-year-old she was at the start of the series, she IS her future self. But…

Protocol. Prefrontal Cortex won't be able to explain why it's so important, but they will go to great lengths to protect it.

You'd be amazed at what lengths the brain will go to […]

More like *than I imagined*. Biography, a SC did something critical that we would never have guessed.

#WordWeavers 10/11: Share a passage from your WIP where the setting is doing as much storytelling as the characters.

From Crystal Falls (coming soon!) a sci-fi murder mystery (text in alt)

Text reads:
The sun caught the tops of Mount Eos first. Bright flags of brilliance bloomed above them, then steadily crept down from the heights. It was not a monolith, but formed a rank of craggy pillars with wild buttresses and columns of twisted stone. In the rosy light it looked like a fairy castle, ethereal and unreal. Crystals sparkled across the turrets and towers, flashing as the light descended and caught a new set. No. *This* was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Zee had done well to find this place, convince him to come. It felt healing. Soothing. A good place to rest. To stop. He felt an easing in his chest, a tightness loosening that he hadn't even known was there.

Then the light hit the plateau, and Cantor realized that no, no, he hadn't seen anything beautiful before at all. In a sudden flush of pink and red, the whole plateau burst into flame. Light bloomed all around them. It was like a flower opening, no, a gentle smile on a lover's face, the first sip of coffee in the morning, a warm zephyr making flowers nod across a meadow. No. It was like nothing he had ever experienced. He felt as if a hand had reached into his chest and squeezed, a goddess had whispered into his ear. *Look at this.* Mount Eos indeed. Goddess of dawn. He felt breathless.

#WordWeavers 11 Oct: Share a passage from your WIP where the setting is doing as much storytelling as the characters.

This is a passage from 'Management Apologises for the Inconvenience':
#thementalmansion

‘Oh! Oh, this one. This one’s a beauty. Hold on, don’t breathe too loudly, it’s delicate.’
They lift a dream that glows colder than the others. The moment it rises from the chest, the air around you cools, and the shadows shimmer as though dusted with frost.
The cloud unfurls, slow and reverent.
You’re standing in a winter night so still it feels enchanted. Moonlight glistens on untouched snow, each crystal catching the light like a tiny star. The trees are coated in frost, their branches glittering as though dipped in silver. Your path home stretches ahead, glowing faintly, a pale ribbon through a galaxy of frozen sparks.
The snow muffles every sound. The cold steals every scent. And in that silence, the world feels impossibly vast and impossibly gentle.
You remember the way your breath hung in the air like a ghost. The night wrapped around you, making you slow your steps, just to stay in it a little longer.
