What bird is this? πŸ€” (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌎 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds πŸ¦‰πŸ§πŸ¦†πŸ¦©πŸ¦…πŸͺΏπŸ¦š

A photo of a small, pale raptor perched upright on a weathered wooden post, looking down over its left shoulder. Its plumage is a light sand-brown with creamy, spotted underparts, yellow legs with sharp talons, and bright dark eyes with a yellow eye-ring.

Clue: This pale, fierce little hunter of the Great Plains is the lightest-coloured race of North America’s smallest falcon! Can you name this subspecies?

Fun Fact: Like others of its species they do not build their own nests. Instead, across the northern plains and parklands, they heavily rely on taking over abandoned stick nests built by Black-billed Magpies or crows.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A photo of a medium-sized bird (27–30 cm / 10.5–12 in long) perched vertically on rough tree bark. The bird features a vibrant red patch on the back of its crown, a black forehead, and a long, sharp black beak pointing slightly upward. Its face and neck are light-coloured with fine black streaks, while its back and wings display a striking yellow-green plumage covered in dark black bars and spots.

Clue: Look closely at my back and chest! My name comes from the distinct, ladder-like black bars and spots pattern covering my olive-green plumage.

Fun Fact: Unlike many of its kind that spend almost all their time high up in trees, this South American species frequently hunts for food down on the ground, using its long beak to dig into soil and logs to feast on its favourite food: ants!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? πŸ€” (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds πŸ¦‰πŸ§πŸ¦†πŸ¦©πŸ¦…πŸͺΏπŸ¦š

A side-profile photo of a relatively large and plump bird (36–43 cm / 14–17 in long) standing on a forest floor amidst ground litter and sparse green grass blades. The bird features a slate-grey back and wings, a whitish face with a pink eye-ring, dark red-pink legs, and a distinctive white "V" pattern bordered by dark grey on its chest, with black crescent spots along its lower belly.

Clue: This ground-dwelling eastern Australian native is famous for the bold, white "V" across its chest and its loud, repetitive "whoop-whoop" call that echoes through the forest!

Fun Fact: Creatures of Habit! These birds prefer walking over flying and will often tread the exact same pathways back and forth every day when traveling between their favourite feeding spots.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A medium-sized bird (36–42 cm / 14–17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak.

Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula!

Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicksβ€”with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? πŸ€” (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds πŸ¦‰πŸ§πŸ¦†πŸ¦©πŸ¦…πŸͺΏπŸ¦š

A striking medium-to-large male bird (100–120 cm / 39–47 in long) perched on a grey rock. It displays vibrant iridescent green scales on its back, a brilliant golden-yellow and red rump, and a white hood with fine black striped patterns fanning around its head, along with long, barred tail feathers extending dramatically behind it.

Clue: Named after the wife of a Governor-General of India, this high-altitude Asian traveler is famous for its shimmering cape and dramatic, extra-long tail.

Fun Fact: Despite the male's vibrant, eye-catching plumage, these birds are surprisingly elusive in the wild, spending most of their time hiding in dense bamboo thickets in the mountain forests of southwestern China and Myanmar.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A photo of a large seabird (1–1.4 m / 3–4.5 ft long) standing atop a wooden post with its wings partially outstretched. The bird features a white head, a long orange-tinged bill, and dark gray feathered plumage on its body against a soft, warm-toned background.

Clue: Famous for steep plunge-dives along coastal shores, this grand seabird carries a spacious pouch built for catching fish!

Fun Fact: This species is one of only two of its kind that forage by diving directly into the water from heights as high as 18 m (60 ft), using its expandable throat pouch like a net to scoop up fish and water.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
