i think they loved the power over us. it wasn't just that they were scared into it. i know for the exparents it was surely that they loved it.

There are very few memories that last a life time; sadly, abuse is one. Sometimes the memory is so horrific that it requires the victim to forget entire years of their life just to keep that memory from incapacitating them.
